Frame Repair Help Needed - ALL FIXED

Post by Jon » Sat Jun 13, 2009 4:06 pm

As you can see in the pics below, I've removed the Bubba plates, what was left looks like someone tried to take out tree stumps and ripped the pintle from the frame.
Bill Mullen in Melbourne sent me up a GPW frame section. excellent !just filled in the hole....
I had some correct gauge metal for the rear cross member.

It's now time to weld the repair pieces in.
My question relates to the area between the A-Frame and rear cross member......Last Photo.....is there a weld holding the top to the bottom ?...
IF SO!....is it full length. I know there's the plate which ties both together, just curious about that weld.

Cheers
JR

Hi JR,

Off the top of my head i cant answer your Q about the weld, however i think i can add some info regarding the pate to strengthen the pintle.

During ww2, the Australian army added reinforcing plates to some jeeps around the pintle area as part of a strengthening/repair procedure. They found that the jeeps pulling trailer/ multiple trailers in the 'trailer trains' were getting the rear crossmember/pintles ripped out by the trailers- particuarly when they stuck in mud!

I have some pics i`ll try to forward along to you when i get home next week. So, might not have been the work of bubba!

Apart from all that, its great to see you've moved onto the chassis stage. Will she be ready for Corowa next year?

Cheers,
Ian.

Jon on my GPW there is no weld on the inside where the A frame bottom meets the top of the crossmember, only welds are on the outside. Don't know if this helps. Andy

Hi Jon,

No weld, and there should be a gap of about 1/8in. between the two. I tried searching for the thread a few years back....

Many thanks.........
Just welded in the cross member repair plate. I'll try and grind out the weld that's there on the A-Frame at the moment......
I had an idea there shouldn't be a weld, but just checking.....as the Irish say. "To be sure, to be sure"

Much appreciated.

Ian....Corowa......hummm. fingers crossed.......

Got everything welded in, next is the reio plates, had to prime the repairs as I may not get back to it until next weekend. with a little luck, maybe earlier.
I tried to grind out the weld, but at least I tidied it up a little, at least it looks better now than when I started. Primer is still wet.....

Cheers

I wasn't happy about trying to grind out that Bubba Weld.. so I took to the rear cross member with a thin cut off disk.
This allowed me to fix where I went a little deep with the grinder trying to get rid of it.
Thanks for posting the photos Tom and John..... most appreciated....

Image

Then it was just a matter of grinding off the weld on both the rear cross member and the A-Frame, and welding the piece back in....
Piece of cake!

I was deliberately careless doing the welds holding the reinforcing plate to match the original look, now I have the "Gap" and the pintle hook fits...and, most importantly, looks like it should.......OK. I know the eyes are upside down, but I was only testing the fit......

It's gotta look better than this........

Jon,
Repairs look very good! I noticed the rear crossmember and pintle hook plate has the lower hole drilled through on both. My question, is this proper for an earlier (Feb 44) GPW? Since mine had neither rear crossmember or A member for pintle when I started repairs. Right now only the pintle plate (Repo ) has hole, the crossmembrer does not. Should I drill out the crossmember to be correct? Thanks.

G'day Bill,
As you can see in the "Before" photo my rear cross member had the hole ( along with a few dozen others). but I measured the position and the size, and both matched , so I put it back ......and as my GPW came after yours, (mine is a matching frame GPW 195611) my best, more or less educated guess is.....your cross member should be drilled also.

Jon,
Thanks for the rely. I noticed the hole in your before pic(#2) after repair plates removed. Thovis's pic showed the hole but his is quite q bit later than ours but still a good indicator. John's pic also shows the hole but no mention of the serial number of his GPW was on the post. I haven't taken the time to see if it's listed on serial number list. I remember reading other posts about this hole and some were on the crossmember, others weren't.
Your parts colours pages are a big help, Thanks for that as well.

For those of us in the dark...can someone explain the story about this hole and how it relates to GPW's...like the correct size and when, why or how it did or did not appear? And by the way Jon, nice job, looking at someone's before/after pictures is what I enjoy most about restorations. Thanks! Andy

Andy,
I started a Thread back in 2007 . actually a Poll.......if you check that thread it may help or confuse you....
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=98702" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There was originally a rivet in that position, it was the rivet which was dropped in production..... or rather...it was a hit and miss affair with GPW's and it would appear that it was a rivet throughout the Willys frame production.
The rivet hole is 3/8" diameter.
