Ok this starter is actually from my cj2a but you guys have them on your mb/gpws also

noticed a broken part when i took the bendix drive apart it was in 3 pieces so being bored at work i used the arc welder and put it back together not sure if it will hold up

anyways what is this part? what does it do? and anyone have one or is welding ok? will it hold up

here is the part(s) it should be 1 piece round!

It's the front end of your starter drive's spring attaching head that has an anchor tab on it. It is keyed to the shaft to anchor it while the other

rear end of the drive is allowed to move against the spring. Which I don't see in your photos so it is probably shattered and laying in the bottom of the bell housing. If it breaks where you welded it (and it most likely will since it was a tempered part) while the starter is engaing the flywheel you could throw pieces up in there and damage the ring gear on your flywheel then you'll be pulling the whole engine to work the flywheel issue.

They are sold as an assembly. PN EBA-46.

It's funny. I bought a new starter bendix just the other day and I noticed, when I took out the bolt holding the spring to the gear, that they've eliminated that fragile part, and instead, have a longer, one piece that extends all the way to the slotted drive part just aft of the intermediate bearing.

Over the years, I've had break, several of those weak bits and frankly, I couldn't see why they put them in, as theres no lateral flexing of the bendix when it engages, just twisting. So to see someone's eliminated it is good. Although, I don't know who the manufacturer was, because there was no brand name on the box, just 'Starter Drive Unit'.

Back to your question, No, it won't last if welded. I tried that once and it just broke up after a couple of starts. New units are relatively cheap.

I didn't buy my part from Ron, the only reason being that the shipping cost to Australia would have made it dearer than a locally purchased part. That said, I looked at Ron's site first. I liked what I saw but was puzzled by the terminology.

You see, I only really wanted the little gear, but I couldn't figure out what was the difference between a 'Bendix Drive' and a' Bendix Drive Flange'.Is one of those the spring and the drive flanges only, and the other the gear?
Does Ron sell the gear separately? If he does, that's great. I could possibly have gotten the gear, and with shipping got it to Oz cheaper than buying the whole bendix drive assembly locally. Darn!

I don't know of anyone selling individual parts of the Bendix Drive Assembly to the public. If you should find a source please let us all know who that source is.

Ron's list uses the Willys part numbers instead of the Auto-lite part numbers.
A17702 starter motor bendix drive 40.00 (EBA-46 drive assy complete)
A1585 starter motor bendix drive flange 40.00 (PS-1079A Pinion Housing)
A1245 6v starter motor, 6 volt, (plus core) 200.00 (MZ4113 starter assy)
