Why is it that some GPWs show 2430 lbs and other are in the 3200s?

More Data Plates INFORMATION Required Like THESE PHOTOS

Post by Doug L. » Fri Feb 28, 2014 9:13 pm

Here's my data plates off my GPW I'm currently restoring.
I believe they're brass.

My chassis and body serial numbers match: 3432 However, strangely the engine block is 3413

Why so close, but not the same?

Hi Doug,
Why so close, but not the same?
The main reason is because the motor is a re-stamped replacement motor. That type Ford made GPW motor block was not made before about Oct., '42.

My guess would be that someone did not want to get caught making a 3 way matching numbers GPW so they stamped a close number on a Ford block to pass it off as a motor made on the same day except they screwed up by using a post Oct. '42 made motor because they knew nothing about the various 16 changes Ford had made to the GPW block throughout it's production run.

Hey Tom! Who would've stamped it? You could tell it's a post Oct. '42 block from that single pic?

Thanks

Who would've stamped it? Most likely whom ever did the last restoration job. You could tell it's a post Oct. '42 block from that single pic? Yes
I could narrow down the date even more if you post photos of the motor block casting date. This will be either a raised letter and some number digit below the distributor ( about half way down the block ) or it will be a raised circle about the size of a quarter at the bottom right hand lower corner of the motor block below the starting motor location.

More plates for the collection. Strange that the serial number plate is steel
but the other 2 are brass. Maybe this gives a clue to change over date to
steel plates?

I have a steel GPW data plate originally riveted to the glove box door. SN 92282, date jan 13 1943.
The registration number calculator generates a number that looks to be outside the AAW data base.
I need some help confirming a contract number and an estimated registration number.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Tim,

A photo of the serial number data plate will be needed to answer your questions about a close hood number.

Hello to all,
this is the serial number of my frame. I would like to know the DoD, and the correct information to be stamped on the nomenclature plate (1/4 ton 4x4 or ...) about my number. Where can I find a picture of an example?
Thank you so much for the help!
greetings
Loris-CH
