Hi all,
via Peter, a good friend of mine, I aquired a few speedometers. I now have some to fiddle around with. There are a few steward warners, a King Seeley and a Motometer. I have some postwar ones too, but they are not pictured.
As you can see in the photos, 3 of them are stewart Warner. (one is missing the face plate). The one I am interested in mainly, is the long needle speedo. I am a bit confused though. I would of expected the long needle Stewart Warner to have the same body as the other 2 Stewards (which are both short needle). This one has a body that is considerably less deep. Am I missing some info here, or woud I be correct to assume that the body of the speedo has been replaced? The body is as deep as the KS speedo that is pictured.

The long needle speedo is also missing the odometer reset shaft.
In general, I would like to tinker with these speedo's a bit to get them working. If someone has a donor speedo for sale, of parts thereof, I would be very interested.
Kind regards,
Stijn

Re: Speedometer identification help needed
If other details are needed to sort this out, I can provide extra pictures.
Here are the two (presumably) long needle steward warners.

Re: Speedometer identification help needed
Mystery solved!
I went ahead and opened up the long needle speedo. Turned out to be a Waltham, and not a stewart warner.
As it happens, I had 2 correct faceplates lying around. The previous owner used the original screws of the face, so those didnt need to be sourced. The insides looked very nice, and looked to be still oiled. Here is the speedo now. I know, not a beauty queen, but a working speedo! Cosmetics will come later.
I would really like to source a broken Waltham speedo now, to replace the missing pieces. The odometer trip rod is missing, sadly. Also, the body should be replaced. The old one has holes... Since this speedo performs so beautifully, it deserves a proper resto...
I hope someone can help?
Kind regards,
Stijn

Hmmmm....no chance you can source a correct Waltham face for that speedo? That's a rarer option than the long needle SW....

Re: Speedometer identification help needed
Hi Chuck,
thank you for your assistance, once again.
In my last post, I added a picture of the Waltham face I added. Is this not the correct face for this Waltham? It is the type with the 2 screws on the outer edge, and no notches.
Also, is there any way you know of to Judge what type of needle goes with this speedo? With my limited knowledge of Walthams, I don't know wich needle this one acutally needs. This speedo turned out to be something of a mixmaster, so I can't assume the needle is correct. I'm even starting to think the needle is more correct for SW then for Waltham, because of the shape of the needle.
What do you think?
Thx,
Stijn

Hi stijn
It's Peter. Sorry for late reply as I didn't see this form you post I must had missed it until I saw it now.
The speedo I gave you the one with long needle SW came out of my early dodge when I bought it. The owner told me he couldn't find any early slat speedo. he told me he took the Waltham speedo of the parts blitz and the broken SW speedo of the GPW and swap the face and needle and put it in the dodge.
So the Waltham speedo should have a short needle.
I still don't have the correct speedo for my early dodge, as I am using a repro right now and still trying to find a slat speedo for the early dodge.
How is your jeep going along.
Cheers Peter
