Camp Petaluma West Coast MV Swap Meet, Gathering 4/24-29, 2018 MORE NEWS

Post by John Neuenburg » Thu Oct 26, 2017 7:14 am

IMPORTANT NEWS HAS BEEN ADDED 4/17/18. READ THROUGH THE THREAD IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO FOR COUPLE WEEKS, AND DAY-VISITORS SEE THE 4/17 POST

The 41st big Spring meet will make its second appearance in Petaluma, CA, USA the last week of April 2018, one week later than normal. This is an early notice for people planning their 2018 vacation and travel schedule.

Since the 1970s the Military Vehicle Collectors of California has hosted the largest annual MV swap meet and gathering west of the Mississippi. It has grown to be the de facto west coast MV meet, continuing the legacy of famous past events: The Patterson Rally, Big Bear Park, and Camp Delta at Tower Park (September Camp Delta still happening). It brings buyers and sellers of MVs, parts, and militaria together right when everybody is coming out of winter ready for action! Time to clean out the shed and move those parts to a new home!

Special displays at this meet include Military Dodges, plus a display of Military Motorcycles, Scooters, and Bicycles. An extremely scenic MV road run to Point Reyes National Seashore and the historic Marconi Radio Station is scheduled, a visit by the EMU-309 UH-1H Huey helicopter with rides for EMU Inc. members who donate, a carpool trip to Sonoma for the ladies, and more!

This venue is in the North San Francisco Bay Area at the North end of the historic old town of Petaluma.

It's an ideal opportunity for out-of-area people to combine U.S. and California tourism with their favorite hobby! It is a wine growing and dairy ranching region known for its scenic beauty and great MV driving roads. Unlike previous locations for this meet, those flying into the major airports in San Francisco or Oakland can take an Airporter bus to within a few miles of the event, then get a lift from a friend, J's Taxis, Uber, or Lyft. There is also airline service to nearby Sonoma County Airport where the SMART train will take you to Petaluma. Many hotels, restaurants, antique stores and other shopping in town makes this ideal for couples and families, with kids who are not in school enjoying the KOA pool and play structures.

The MVCC Board is talking to KOA management about various improvements over our first event there, including closer parking for visitors who don't have a campsite or cabin, the day-user fee, low cost camping/parking in the Group Area, and how to free up more campsites because we expect to be full. We are also looking at ways to help day-users move purchased parts to their cars parked outside the campground.

EDIT 4/8/18 - soggy parking fields mean we again have offsite visitor parking and a different way to get to KOA - see later in thread and www.MVCCNews.net event page in the calendar area.

Contact KOA for campsite or cabin. If you can't get the accommodation you want, check back because cancellations always happen. 707-763-1492.

KOA has large lodges and studio lodges with bathroom and kitchen, and here is a photo of the small Camping Cabin with neither. Inexpensive compromise between luxury and camping:

There are many long pull throughs which can be divided to save money. There would be vehicle access on both sides. Ask KOA. Many now have paved parking pads and patios.

Something you don't see at every MV meet - John Sorensen's PBR from Napa. You get a glimpse of one of the big lodges available for rent. These sleep six:

View from pool to the north area with RV hookup sites, dry camping, and the Group Camp Area just beyond (KOA may activate another Group Area near their office below the entrance road). There is a storage yard for trailers and extra cars, trucks on the little hill to the left. This give more room at campsites and cabins for MVs or trade goods:

It's important for those new to the meet to notice the north area which is the right as you come in the gate. It is separated from our other area by the Redwood Grove area which is mostly occupied by over-winter campers who leave May 1. The large area to the left is where most of our RV sites and all cabins are.

Just east of there, KOA mowed a LZ for EMU-309, the excellent UH-1H Huey restored by Geoff Carr and Peter Olesko. They hope to make it again on Saturday. Interesting story - Geoff and Peter served as crew chiefs together in the 135th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. It was a joint US Army/ Royal Australian Navy unit. Peter went on to learn how to fly and is the chief pilot. MVCC member Randy Parent is also a pilot and has arranged for the ship to attend many MVCC meets. They run the non-profit EMU, Inc. and Hueyvets.com. EMU was the call sign they used for the "slicks" (troop ships). An Emu is a flightless Australian bird, and the acronym also stood for "Experimental Military Unit." They used TAIPAN for the gun ships, a taipan being a poisonous Australian snake:

In the north area there is a shared outdoor kitchen with several cooktops - welcome for many campers in this area:

Some MVers travel a long way to get to the big Spring meets here. They come from as far as Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio, Arizona, Alaska, Australia, Japan, UK, sometimes Norway, and in this case Washington state:

Camp Petaluma and Camp Delta at Tower Park Resort in September are swap meets for pros and amateurs. There is nothing like touching the parts before buying them. At a big MV gathering there is likely an example of the vehicle the part goes on, so a prospective buyer can compare to make sure it's right. Seen in the background is the Rec Hall which is the location for the big "Dodge Boys" showcase Friday afternoon and other activities. All military Dodges in any condition and from any era are invited:

As usual with these Spring and Fall meets there is no vendor fee, just your campsite or cabin rental. No vendors in other places. Anybody can put items out to sell. No vehicle registration fee. We have places in the campground for MVs driven in by non-campers but make sure you stop at the office to buy your daily wristband, or pick up one at Will Call left there by your camping buddy. Those with campsites, studio lodges, and Camping Cabins get up to four bands, and families in big lodges can get six if they need them:

More information to come!

IMPORTANT INFO FOR THOSE WANTING TO CAMP
The place is getting full. Jo-Ann has a number of names on campsites but they have not paid their deposit to KOA yet. If KOA doesn't receive a deposit by TOMORROW, they have the right to rent it to someone else. This deadline has been published for quite some time. What we don't want is non-MV event people being interspersed in our midst. So if you are planning to camp, and Jo-Ann has assigned you a site, contact Petaluma KOA at 707-763-1492 to put down a deposit. They have your name on your site, lodge, or cabin. If you are not on Jo-Ann's list you are not on KOAs list. You MUST contact her to choose an available site. 408-238-8277 or mamalesser@yahoo.com. I heard there were a dozen or so available as of yesterday, mixed type of sites and cabins including a few long pull-throughs in excellent locations for selling/displaying.

When the event sells out and you don't have a site (which is the best way to attend this meet), do not despair! There are always cancellations. Jo-Ann will keep a wait list. You might not get the location you want but you will make muster!

EDIT 3/25/18: Jo-Ann turned over unreserved campsites to KOA, so contact them directly.

If you can dry camp with a tent, there should be options right up to event week on lawn.

Here is a recent magazine ad. It features the art on the back of the 2018 souvenir T-shirt:

T-shirt will carry a breast logo with event name and a jeep image. These high quality shirts are $20 and will be for sale at the MVCC HQ tables near the Rec Hall, along with other merchandise, including some remaining 2017 shirts that feature the logo in the ad on an earlier post. Tan and olive drab. Merchandise can be pre-ordered from the MVCC Secretary John Verissimo. See the link at www.MVCCNews.net.

Important updates are now up on www.MVCCNews.net in the Event listing. Go to Basic Training. This includes more info about showcases. Day visitors especially should read this closely. There is also a summary of activities in that section.

The short story for day visitors is we again have a $10 admission fee and offsite parking because the big fields will be too soggy for use. Our shuttle service will work differently and is actually better. You PHONE J's Taxis for pickup, discounted rate $3/mile. Park anywhere. Closest lot is .6 miles from KOA. But it's best for commuters to DRIVE their MV to the campground if they have one. It will be allowed in because we have parking for those not using a buddy's campsite for parking. Another option for non-campers is to reserve a site in the inexpensive Group Area. This brings parking at KOA for your car, pickup, ice chest, camp chairs, or for that matter your MV, plus an admission wristband. You don't have to camp. Ask KOA if spaces are available 707-763-1492.

NEWS: We are moving the meet in April 2019! Petaluma KOA is a very nice campground with a variety of accommodations in an excellent MV driving part of the state, with a really nice, historic downtown to visit, but the campground's inability to park day-visitors at this time of year plus a few other rules caused Dave Ball to keep looking for a Spring meet venue. He found one and it will be in a more central location! News about this will be announced in the April MVCC Newsletter due out the week of 4/8, and then to the public. Not before, so don't ask!

Go to the Events link and on the calendar click on Camp Petaluma. Or farther down the home page you'll see another link. Once in you should see a few links on the left.

BTW, the Interactive Map has an incorrect heading and will be changed. It' is the 2018 layout. Here you can see who has a reservation where. Hover your pointer over the square symbol on a site.

There is also a Google Map. Terrain view shows the campground and various things around it. Zoom out and you will see Pete's Henny Penny Restaurant at Stony Point Road and Petaluma Blvd North, a nice casual place to go. Across the street there is a dirt lot for day-visitor parking. This is the best place for day visitor trailers and unloading MVs for driving in. Campers may store large trailers there that don't fit in the storage yard inside KOA. With the new "on call" taxi method of shuttling visitors to KOA, it is possible to park anywhere. For example Cattlemen's Restaurant's manager is OK with using their paved lot. See it on the other side of Petaluma Blvd North, right next to US 101. Park in the rear and wait for your ride by the front door. Don't park in front of Jay Palms Saddle Shop. This lot is .8 miles from KOA, but due to the odd road it's 1.2 miles going to KOA. J's Taxis is giving us a $3/mile rate. YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR CELL PHONE to call them at 707-364-1544.

DAY-USE VISITORS....

Reminder that those commuting from home or hotel in a MV can drive it in, subject to your buying a $10/day wristband at the KOA office. We have certain places to park them inside or just outside the campground gates. Or arrange to park at your buddies campsite. See www.MVCCNews.net for info about that.

KOA is limiting our day visitors to 100 per day! Get there early especially Thursday-Saturday. UPDATE: We think this limit is "fuzzy" and particularly for our day visitors driving in with a MV. Any issues, call John at 415-847-2801.

Visitors in "civilian" cars must park offsite. The dirt lot by Pete's Henny Penny Restaurant is smaller than last year but it's not a problem, since we are now using J's Taxis as our on-call shuttle service to KOA. 707-364-1544. Discounted deal, $3 per mile. So visitors can park anywhere that's legal and can call for a ride any day or night. We suggest parking BEHIND the Cattlemen's Restaurant, just across Petaluma Blvd North where Stony Point Road comes in from the KOA direction. It is a dinner-only place, park in the rear out of the way please. Parking areas are .6 to .8 miles from KOA.

Check out the event listing at www.MVCCNews.net for more details and tips, and especially the suggestion about a place to store a trailer if you are a visitor. Campers can store trailers and extra cars inside the campground in the RV storage lot, OK to block tenant trailers during our event week.

Visitor logistics are a reason why we are going elsewhere in April 2019, as nice as this place is!

Re: Camp Petaluma West Coast MV Swap Meet, Gathering 4/24-29, 2018 DONE DEAL

Post by John Neuenburg » Sat May 05, 2018 9:55 pm

This was the last hurrah for the Petaluma venue - back to Tower Park in April 2019! Their renovations will be completed.

We'll talk about the Dodge display plus the Motorcycles, Scooters, Bicycles display in other posts. Ditto the Point Reyes MV Excursion. Photos will be posted including on www.MVCCNews.net in the photo gallery.

Petaluma was an acceptable replacement for two years because it was the only campground in our region with an adequate number of sites, lots of campsites with utilities, tent camping, and cabins for those who prefer them. It's not easy to find this blend of features. The fringe benefits have been the scenic roads for MV excursions, a nice downtown to visit, and proximity to the many MVers in North SF Bay Area. But the lack of dry fields for day visitor parking which meant we had to use offsite parking and on-call shuttles was an unacceptable situation for the organizers. The hobby needs to be friendly to commuters from home and hotels. Vendors want as much traffic as they can get, and visiting shoppers want to have their car closer for loading their purchases. We haven't faced a visitor admission fee until we came to Petaluma KOA. Many campgrounds with swimming pools and other amenities charge day-users. We have been able to negotiate this away at Tower Park, and it looks like there will be no visitor fee in 2019 and for that matter at the Camp Delta Fall meet September 18-23, 2018 at Tower Park.

Nearly everybody was happy to hear about the return to Tower Park April 23-28, 2019. More central, great swap meet layout, day-visitor parking right there. No doubt the smaller version this September will be well attended because of people wanting to check out the changes to the campground, including the water park in Campground 4, so they can choose or trade sites and cabins for April.

For campsites and cabins for the upcoming event this September, contact Jo-Ann Lesser at mamalesser@yahoo.com. Reservations for the April 2019 event can be made starting October 1.
