U.S. Gas Jerry Can Makers: Korea-Vietnam ('49-'75)
I'm no expert on the subject, but for the past couple of years I've been looking for Korea and
Vietnam vintage jerry cans. I couldn't find any detailed list of makers or years produced, so
I've kept notes in the ones I've found, or seen for sale or that were mentioned here on the
Gee. I'll put my notes here and ask anyone who has info on other post-WWII cans to add to
this thread and I'll update the list so we could have this information available for all us
M-series MV owners, similar to the great lists that Luca has created for the WWII cans.
ANY input, additions or corrections would be greatly appreciated.
Unless otherwise noted, all are the standard screw-lid cans,
with deeply impressed block lettering in three lines on the bottom (underside):
ICC-5L
(manufacturer)
20-5-(year)
Army
...(lower sides marked USA and QMC through 1951, with a few also showing up in 1952)
...(lower side or sides marked US on 1952 and later, with a few also seen in 1951)

CONCO - 51, 52, 53
G.P.&F.CO - 51(see note 5), 52, 53
JR-TOY - '45 can parts assembled in '50 by Russakov (see note 4)

(2) surface stamped in 65, NOT deeply impressed, with different 3rd line. (see img)
(3) sometime after '69 and by '72, the ICC in the first line was replaced by DOT.
(4) thanks to Jeep Guy, Steve J, and Philippe (guest) for posts back in 2003-04 about
cans marked JR-TOY from 1945 that were also stamped "ASSEMBLED 7-50 RUSSAKOV".
Apparently unassembled surplus parts were later used to start-up Korean War production.
Tipdog and Adrain Hardgrave reported that one set of these spare JR-TOY 1945 parts was
sold on eBay in April, 2006.
(5) thanks to Steve J for his 6/9/06 topic about his discovery of a GP&F can with a
bottom line of 20-8-51 instead of the standard 20-5-51!.
Thanks to John Ryan for his 6/18/06 topic reporting his '49 dated NESCO.
Thanks to Steve (41wld45) for his 8/26/09 topic reporting his '49 RUSSAKOV.
Thanks also to Armydriver, Bread-box, Patch and Dead Horse for their input!

I've just picked up this 1952 Bennett gas can with a standard screw-on lid and USMC stamped low
on both sides in place of the USA/QMC. This is the first 50's Marine Corps can I've seen, though
Armydriver reported earlier that he used to have a '51. I'll be updating the list. Does anyone
else have any 1950's USMC gas cans?
UPDATE: have now also verified a 1951 Bennett USMC can w. screw lid.

Dave ,I do usually focus on WWII cans, but it is for sure interesting to note how on this can the USMC abandoned the european style spout reverting to the usual screw lid.

Dave it is good to see your post on the Korean war dated cans. I have a couple and will try to get the info off of them for you, if they are different than what you have.

Thanks Dave. I will pass the information to my jerrycan collector friend. he collects all kind of jerrycans,up to the present days, while I focus on WWII ones. He has more than 300...
I often mentioned that I own an adapter, of sure American manufature, that enables to use the usual U.S. fuel nozzle (aka donkey dick,) also with the WWII U.S.M.C. spout. This kind of adapter would perfectly fit with the U.S.M.C. using both kind of lids.

Re: U.S. Gas Jerry Can Makers: Korea-Vietnam ('49-'75)
I've been updating this list over the past three and a half years since I posted it, so I decided to try a BTT to see if anyone has any new info on cans not listed. Thanks!

Old Dog,
Maybe you should ask the moderator to make it a Sticky so that it remains at the top.

Re: U.S. Gas Jerry Can Makers: Korea-Vietnam ('49-'75)
Hi fellows
I am looking for information of jerrycans manufactured in the years 1962 to 1968.
Many vehicles that delivery our country in those years, such as M606, M38A1, M37B1 and M35, among others, do not know if they carried jerrycans of the date of delivery or before that date.
What you can say about it?
Thanks in advance!

Re: U.S. Gas Jerry Can Makers: Korea-Vietnam ('49-'75)
Hi Luis! The only maker I know of in the 1960's was U. S. Metal Can (stamped USMC on the bottom). The earliest military 60's can I've found was a 1965, and it had light surface stamping on the bottom (see picture at the beginning of this post). Later 60's and 70's cans had the common deep-stamped three lines of information. I'm sure others here can add more information from their own experience.
