41 Wheeling Can

Post by Rustman » Thu Feb 01, 2018 2:54 am

No pictures yet. Antique mall find. In the booth with the chalk painted and belt sanded furniture. This one has some Home Depot "Army Green" paint applied over a badly flaked paint job. It would appear that these were galvanized from what I've read on here. So quick question. Were they plain galvanized in service or still painted OD? I'd like to restore this can to proper appearance. Oh and it still has the two tab lid.

There are a number of posts on here with photos of the cans in naked galvanization ( the Louisiana pics and others). Be cautious removing old paint, as the galvo can be damaged. Great can to have in your collection, as they were early mass production units. :D

Re: 41 Wheeling Can--NOW WITH PICTURES

Rick,

Thanks. I'll certainly proceed with caution. Probably use acetone to start. I'm sure the paint this person used was low quality. Here's pictures showing the can as found. I really hate rewarding this kind of bad behaviour (poorly done overpaints) but it's the earliest can I've seen "in the wild" and couldn't help myself. Cap is stuck on at the moment. I haven't looked inside. Kind of afraid to.

That can looks in pretty good shape except the handle on one side.

What does the interior look like?
