Made for the Australian Department of Defense, probably WWII or prior.
I don't know if they still procured this type of can after WWII.

Used for petrol, oil, or possibly water.

Is there a date or makers mark on the bottom of the can?

Sorry, I am not well versed in Aussie equipment.

This Australian can, may possibly be very early, the tilt and small diameter of the pourer are indicators. Please examine both the bottom, (most likely imprint of maker and date) and the handle. If marked on the handle it may be very lightly hand stamped of date only, usually 3 or 4 numbers. Would like photo of bottom if possible. Great can!
