"Faux" British Flimsy

Post by Rustman » Fri Jan 05, 2018 11:40 am

Picked up this cheap tin at the antique mall today for $3. As so many period photos of flimsy's show them repurposed as ash cans, funnels, cookers etc I figured I could do the same with this. It measures 9.5x9.25x13.75. It also holds 5 gallons when filled to the top. I don't know how close this is to the dimensions of a real British 4 gallon can. Can anyone advise as to color (colour) and any markings that should be painted on the sides? I'm looking to use this reenacting and use as a rag or trash can in my motorpool. Next event is Egypt 1942 at an RAF base, so even though I do AAF this will be the perfect detail to add.

4 Imperial gallons = 4.8 US gallons according to an online converter.
That would leave a little room for expansion.

Hi,

I made a couple of these for display with my desert 1940 CMP truck.

Went to Hobby Lobby and bought some cheap signs with the Shell embossed logo.

Cut out the logo with a pair of industrial scissors and epoxied it to the can.

Then painted it with silver hammer-finish paint.

Looks fairly close to a real one I think...

David,

That really does look good! I decided to go the War Department route with mine. No "embossing". I put one coat of khaki paint bought at Tractor Supply. Looks a pretty good match for British "Sand Yellow". Unfortunately I don't have a picture of it yet. I might have to copy you on any future ones though. That Shell logo cut out and glued to the can really takes the cake.

Well it looks like I'm going to need a whole lot more of these :)

Reminds me of the shacks in the Dominican Republic with the oil can siding. But for those they cut them apart, flattened and tacked to a wood frame.
