Re: Picked Up A '41 Can on Saturday
Some of the water cans have a very faint stamping under the handles that may not be visible if a heavy coat of paint(such as the white on your can) has been applied.

Re: Picked Up A '41 Can on Saturday
Thanks, Roy. I did a preliminary test but that white paint seems impervious to any chemicals I've tried so far. It is green on the bottom though so I'm pretty sure that awful white wasn't the factory color! I'll keep trying.

Roy,
That was great advice.i finally found some carb cleaner that would remove the white paint, albeit slowly. It was marked very faintly. This is what I can make out.

I'm assuming it's a US Metal Can made in 1962. Sound right?

USMC = United States Metal Corporation or something similar, not United States Marine Corps

Luke,
I thought it was United States Metal Can, but I don't really know. Tin Medic sent me an appropriate picture for this thread and I found another you guys may have seen on the Internet.

My wife and I hit an estate sale in Martinez, CA this morning. We passed on a couple of fairly modern cans but did pick up an unusual spout that I thought you guys might like to see. I've certainly never seen another one like it

Re: Picked Up A '41 Can on Saturday
I picked up a water can last fall from the thrift store local. It has the original single coat of white, very nice shape no rust or dents. It seems to be slightly thinner gauge metal and the stamping process made stretch marks (for lack of a better description?) in the manufacturing process. I guessed it was a very late can but it shows like "60" (been awhile since I looked) on the top along with a "w". Inside is very clean, has the light tan coating and does not smell of fuel of any kind. The markings on top under the handle are stamped in to the metal (not raised/imbossed) and are very thin and lightly stamped. Actually a bit hard to read and with a thick coat of paint slobbered on it, the markings would be covered and not readable.
On the side the US is stamped into the metal and look very much like those in the above photo.
Seems odd it would be that good of shape if it were indeed from the 60's.

I've seen, and in fact owned one before. It is civilian, and if you'd like to sell it, I may be interested.d42jeep wrote:My wife and I hit an estate sale in Martinez, CA this morning. Re: Picked Up A '41 Can on Saturday
Due to space limitations, I haven't added many cans but today I ran across one at an estate sale that I just couldn't pass up.
It's a 1943 USN marked can made by Davis Welding & Mfg Co. it has some markings stenciled on the side.
Here are some pictures.

A USN can is always a nice find !
Yours is quite in nice condition, and in my limited experience Davis cans are scarcer than Wheeling.

Re: Picked Up A '41 Can on Saturday
Thanks, guys! My wife and I were at an estate sale in San Leandro, CA today and she spotted a familiar OD shape in an overgrown garden shed. After pulling it out I discovered that it was a 1942 water can made by Nesco. I spent some time this afternoon removing the traces of clinging ivy vines. Unfortunately the previous owner had used it to collect his waste oil so I will be doing a little more interior cleanup in the future.
- Don
Edit-
Has anybody seen a similar air vent on a water can? It looks factory to me but my '43 Nesco water can doesn't have one.

That vent is a feature of some big mouthed cans water cans in 1942. I think it was discontinued at the end of the year, as I cannot remember any 43 can with the same brass valve.
