I may be comepletely wrong, but it seems someone posted a period picture of a GMC compressor truck with a jerrycan with similar markings to styl38's can.
It has been awhile, and I don't remember which forum it was posted in. I think the poster's family member was in the photo, or took the photo.

styl38,
This is not the photo I mentioned in my previous post.
Note the can to the right of the nearest soldier's head, and the can between the legs of the soldier in the truck. Both are marked V 80.

Thanks for this picture : so the cans were not attached to a special unit.

I try to find on other forum the picture about you talk in you're post.

But, i think that the man who do this paint "200" and "V-80" (very good job) on the can have the time to do it.

I don't imagine soldiers spent their time to paint on can ? and to have the pencil to do it too ...

I'm very disturbed about this can, the origin.
Thank you very much for you help
If you have another information/pictures don't hesitate to share them or tell me : if i find some i'll notified here too

styl38,
According to noted jerrycan expert Philippe Leger, V 80 is 80 octane gasoline that has been treated for winter use.
His book does not show any cans marked with 200, so I still cannot answer that question.

Frank USMC emailed me these photos of some of his collection of Marine Corps cans to post.
Thank you Frank.

Water cans.

A Marine Corps gasoline can that was used for motor oil.

The Marine Corps certainly seem to have the most colorful and abundant markings of the US Armed Forces.

This a 1943 conco usmc gas can. It had a red x on both sides. On the side opposite of the usmc stamping in the upper right corner, it said h.t.85 on top of the red x. It had h.t.gasoline on both end panels.

It had a drab blue square with 122 inside.
