Gas Can Value?

Postby wc-51oha » Sun Sep 25, 2011 9:01 am

Yesterday I spotted a gas can in an antique mall. Not being a gas and water can collector didn't recongnize the can and left it sitting there. When I got home I immediately came to this board to try to find some information on this can. I found the listing from Ernie Baals after he had obtained Len McCabes collection and spotted the can in one of his photos, which I have cropped and attached here. The antique mall was kinda dark and the bottom of the can was kind of rough so I couldn't read any markings and there was a small rectangluar plate soldered/welded to one side about 3" up from the bottom. Was curious about this can and it's value.
Any informationo would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

Don,
If the can is constructed, and has a lid like in the picture you posted, it is a WW2 Marine Corps gasoline or water can made in 1942, '43, or '44.

The value is pretty much up to what the purchaser wants to give. The market has wide fluctuations dependent upon many factors.
$5.00-$50.00 with the upper end for someone that is not planning on resale. Others may disagree and are free to state their opinions of value.

The small plate is covering up the USMC embossment.
My guess is that it was a demil requirement from the past of removing the National emblem and Service branch before being sold as surplus material.
No different than the common art of spray painting over the Stars, Service branch, hood numbers, etc of vehicles before they are surplussed.

Here are two examples.
The first is a USMC can that has had the plate removed, and the second is a can that has a USN embossment hiding behind it.
I also have a USA can with the plate still in place, but I do not have a picture of it.

Roy, Thanks for the information. From the size of the plate I would suspect that it is a USMC can. They were asking $20 for it which may be a little high for it's condition.
