Help required with - R/T Remote Control GRA 990

Post by Barrie Richards » Tue Jul 17, 2007 8:42 am

R/T Remote Control GRA 990
C-991

Help !

Can some one please tell me what this is ?

I have acquired one but don't know what it does.
I 'assume' it is a remote control for a PRC25/77 ?

If so how do the two connect ?
What is the cable/plug which connects to the 'Remote' socket ?

Thanks, in anticipation

Barrie,

Check the nomenclature again. At best, what you wrote is incomplete and has typo's. The remote control set normally used with AN/PRC-25/77 and AN/VRC-12 family was AN/GRA-39. Main components of which were C-2328/GRA-39 and C-2329/GRA-39. AN/GRA-nnn never got much above 100 (and most were antenna groups). Yet C-99n/xxx range was reached circa 1954.

Unless the items are foreign, in which case respondent sayeth nought.

Robert,

Thanks for the reply.

The metal case of the unit is the same size as a PRC25/77 and uses the same battery box.

Mine still contained a 13.2 volt rechargeable ni-cad. Battery was quite dead and when opened up contained 11 'D' cells.

The front of the unit has a speaker to the left. Across the lower front a 'power' switch marked 'ext/off/Intl', an orange 'call' light, standard PRC25/77 'audio' socket and a '24 VDC' three pin input socket, twin 'line' plug.

Across the top, left to right, An 'alarm' switch 'on/off', 'rotary Volume' control 'Function' control marked 'Radio/Tel/Ring' and a 'remote' multi pin socket.

Between the Function control and the Multi pin Remote connector is a small metal flap which opens to reveal two switches. The top is marked 'SENS', lo/mdm/hi. The lower is marked 'RF LVL' lo/hi

On the top edge of the unit there is a data plate, which looks 100% original and clearly reads -

'R/T Remote Control GRA-990
C-991
MFG No. 6499100 Serial No. 2107'

Thanks for any info

Barrie,

OK. I haven't a clue, except that I can see why you thought it might be an AN/PRC-25/77 accessory. I don't do much with what I consider the later radios (despite the fact they're 40+ years old!) but maybe someone with a clue will read your detailed post and respond.

Robert's suggestion that it's non-US may be right. Google found a listing for the GRA 990 here, next to one for the GRA 39B:

http://www.zuritc.com/catsheet300.html

Crawling up the directory to Zuritc's home page shows that Zuritc is an Israeli company which sells parts for obsolescent communication items.

http://www.zuritc.com/

So the GRA-990 might be Israeli. Are there any manufacturer's tags externally or internally which add info? Tadiran would prove it's Israeli.

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. That was all I could find on a 'search'.

Haven't opened the unit up yet however all the exterior labelling is in English. [American!]

Wrtitten on the blanking plug for the multi pin connector and 24 volt input blanking plug is 'Glenair Inc'

Don't know if that helps at all.....................

Hunting thro' the garage yesterday I came across this unit and thought I try and find some info, again....

Imagine my surprise when the only thing 'Google' bought up was this post from ten years ago !

Anyone any ideas ?
