One of the things our radiomen had to carry when I was in the 10th Mountain Division with the PRC-77 was a length of WD-1 commo wire, used as a long wire antenna to make transmissions more directional. The insulator on the end of the antenna that was tied to a post, tree, etc was a plastic spoon taken from an MRE.
