Re: Question about MP-57 and connecting MS-53
Ok Robert. Thanks for your input. Funny how Ziro's and my MP-57 have NO SCREW. I wonder how many others are out there. Ziro, as I do not care about "originality", I use a standard lockwasher to keep the bottom section tight on the top of the MP-57.

Re: Question about MP-57 and connecting MS-53
I have two MP-57's that both have the screw and one that doesn't. Also my MP-37 does not have a screw.

Re: Question about MP-57 and connecting MS-53
I have looked again to my MP-57, today.
It has not that big screw, but it has two little screws without a head. I don't know the right name for these. I was possible to loose one of them today after using rust solvent spray over hours. Will see if the other one will be loose tomorrow, too.
These little slot screws have the complete lenght to the antenna pin. From both side turned inside it will fix the antenna section.

Mine all have those set screws. But the antenna locking screw is different.

Re: Question about MP-57 and connecting MS-53
I had forgotten, but several different contractors built the MP-37 and MP-57 and the Order in each case must allow a little lattitude in the details. The only piece that I have left had the single hex head screw and when I looked at it the other night to confirm the thread, I just forgot that some had two opposing slotted screws. But I don't think that no screw was an allowable option.

Whatever the variation in the base, if it's not modified it doesn't decrease its value to a future owner. If no screw, a lock washer seems like a good option. Or however the G.I. did it, like use friction tape.

Re: Question about MP-57 and connecting MS-53
As hard as mast sections have gotten to find, I would not trust friction tape. There is only an inconspicuous very short nub sticking up out of the top for the tape to grab onto. No way would it be satisfactory. The most likely reason for NOS examples turning up today is that they were rejected and never used. I would not use one myself without the set screws. If the work is done properly (meaning no metric fasteners for starters), no one will ever know that the final machining step to make a useful mast base was performed 67 to 74 years late.
