OK. Perhaps the paragraph in TM 11-630 is what I was remembering (about the CH-74).

You will not need the adapter plate as the CH-74 attaches directly to the FT-285 and then the FT-253 attaches to the CH-74. I would assume that the reinforcing bar for the left leg of the FT-285 would be the same. It is made of 3/16" cold rolled steel (CRS) and the holes in it would match those in the left leg. The dimensions are 16" x 1-1/2".

Are there some photos or drawings if I can get or find?

Officially, none that I know of. FM 21-6 was among other things the list of all current TM 11's. The February, 1944 edition that I have a partial copy of only goes up to TM 11-2400. Whether or not there was an earlier edition of TM 11-2726 I don't know. The only one that I know of is from March, 1945, and it shows no usage of CH-74.

If you want to install your SCR-506 in the CH-74-A that you found, my recommendation would be to follow the pertinent portion of the instructions in Figure 7 instead of Figure 6 of TM 11-2726, ignoring those pertaining to the SCR-510/610. And installing the CH-74 instead of the adapter plate on top of the FT-285. The antenna for the BC-653 would be on the right side of the vehicle, with the mast base mounted on an MP-50 instead of on the Dodge mast base bracket. If I had been the engineer in charge, that's the way I would have done it, anyway. The base of the antenna will be much closer to the transmitter output post. You will need one additional IN-101 or IN-121 to take the W-128 through the right end of the CH-74. If you want to use the Dodge mast base bracket, I think that you will want to make a reinforcing plate for the vehicle sheet metal as Dodge only welded those on the left side. The reinforcing plate would be one piece and have the 1-1/16" hole in the center and above and below that, the two 11/32" bolt holes. You will also need two additional Appleton Connectors (61007 & BL-50) to carry the two CO-280's through the right end of the CH-274. Or maybe out the rear of the chest.

Hello,
on the photo you can see FT-285/CH-74-A with the SCR510-A. And the MP-57 is on the left side at the Command Car.

And to the vehicle photos from the first side. There is only one with the antenna base on the right side. All other ones have there antenna base on the left side. My Command Car has the original antenna bracket on the left side, too.

ziro,

I don't see an SCR-510 in your most recent photograph. The small part of a radio visible below the soldier's chin is the BC-652. One of the cords visible goes to the HS-30 that he is wearing under his helmet. The other one goes to either the LS-3 under the cabinet or to a second head set.

As to whether the antenna is tilted back or pointed straight up, it was found in practice that the latter worked better. Which is why TM 11-2726 shows it installed straight up, which requires drilling new holes in both the truck and the mast base bracket (per Figure 12).

As to whether the antenna for the SCR-506 should be on right or left, it works better on the right, whether the radio is in a CH-74 or not. Technically, unlike with coaxial cable fed antennas, the antenna begins at the antenna post on the front of the transmitter. Which is near the right side of the radio set. The antenna feed wire inside the vehicle constitutes nearly 1/3 or the total antenna length. The portion of the feed wire outside of the chest but inside the vehicle contributes little to the effective radiated signal. The portion inside the chest contributes nothing.

However, if the radio is not going to be a working one, none of that really matters. And it is your vehicle and radio.

Reprint of TM 11-2726 $17.50 + $21.88 First Class Mail shipped in a box. Or $13.10 in an envelope but it could arrive slightly bent. Reprint is 3-hole punched and screw-post bound with heavy tan covers.

zirro,

OK. Good luck with it.

PM me your email address and I'll dig some BG-67 and BG-67-A out tomorrow and photograph them. The server software seems to have been changed and only allows links, not files.
