Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
For Spray your average 400ml tin, for paint tin either 1 ltr or 1/2 ltr. For hand spraying from a paint pot you need to find out the type of thinners used unless they have already pre-thinned the paint.

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
I'd be in for either a few spray cans or pints/quart can. Non aerosol might be better for longer shelf life.

Ed,
OK.
Bill,
Not yet. I have been up to my you know what in a consulting project (related to pipelines, not radios or MV's) for the past several weeks. I'm about a thousand emails and messages behind and just haven't had time to call the vendor and see whether they can still make it or not. I'll get to it eventually.

You guys are making this hard when in fact, it is very easy. Spray your parts with black wrinkle paint which is easily available anywhere. Once it cures, over spray with your favorite OD color. No one will know the difference and you avoid all the drama.

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
I just filled in three holes in the BC620 I just picked up and needed to repaint the face plate, I used black wrinkle paint from auto-zone then mixed both ww2 and post war Rapco paint to match the rest of the radio, I then used a modelers trick of using diluted flat black paint to tone down the freshly painted look...........came out great.

Currently available wrinkle paint is no where near what the original wrinkle pattern was.The paint Robert Downs had in the past was nearly a perfect match.

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
I realize that none of the "real stuff" is currently available but there are two differences between the wrinkle finish paint that the Signal Corps used and what you can buy today. One is that auto-parts store black wrinkle is typically a coarser wrinkle pattern than the original. And none of the vehicle paint suppliers have the "right" color. Matching the color is difficult because it takes at least a year for the color to darken fully. The one exception seems to be USMC Forest Green. Apparently USN used the same color on everything.

Robert, Could you or someone post a pic of the OD shade in the spray wrinkle finish you might be getting? Thanks Don

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
I doubt that anyone will make up anything but huge batches of the stuff and it goes bad after sitting on the shelf for years. For the small amount that would be sold for a couple years it would not be worth it to have a huge batch made up.The stuff is expensive not to mention the shipping cost.

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
There would more than likely be at least 100 case min order for production and that is 1200 cans.I don't think that many cans could be sold in two years when the stuff is too old and no longer wrinkles.

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
Assuming we ordered the minimum you listed, 100 cases, about what would the cost of a case run?

Re: Source for Olive Drab wrinkle paint?
Stingray, et al,
As I recall, the paint was color-matched to some NOSB BC-611 top covers that I had and probably still have. With as I recall some allowance for the fact that the color darkens somewhat over the first year or so. Aside from the fact that I haven't been able to attach a photo that wasn't hosted somewhere else, there is too much variation between monitors to guarantee that what anyone was seeing was the same as what I was seeing. I just checked and do not have a photo of one of the reference samples that I can find, anyway. I will get one as I do need to put the top covers on my web site.
I have called my supplier three times now without getting a call back. I will try again soon.
Back when we place the previous two orders, the minimum order was around 600+ 12 oz spray cans. I have been intending this time to see whether or not I can get a nix of spray cans and probably quart cans, so that there was at least a chance that some of it could be shipped to Europe.
On the shelf life of the paint, the manufacturer rates it at two years. It has been found in practice that it is still usable out to around 6 or 7 years if the paint was applied in the shade and then the part moved into direct sunlight with the ambient temperature @ around 90 F or above.
I hesitate to guess at what today's cost might be as the most recent figures that I have are coming up on a decade old.
