MP-50 locations on WW2 U.S. ETO jeeps?

Postby F. R. Fox » Sat Feb 04, 2012 4:28 pm

I'm looking for photos of locations other than the driver's side above left of the grab handle. I know the Brits put them on the driver's side rear end to fit in their gliders, (which I like better), and that the U.S. did the same after the war. All of the photos I have come accross are in the manuals suggested locations, or even on the passenger side in the same location. My reasoning is I think the MP-50 will stick out more than I am comfortable with.

I would like to keep with 100% historical accuracy for the time period. I'm sure there are field mods in photos somewhere, but I would like photographic evidence before I replicate the mod. Anyone have such a photo? Or is there a smaller antenna mount that will fit better in the corner?

I did find this one, but you can't really see it :(

There are photos out there with the MP-50 mounted in various locations not exactly by the book. We don't want ours sticking out that far either so we will be mounting ours with the long side bolted to the Jeep and the short side facing outward with no brush guard.

I was thinking about that too. I have seen photos of that before. I wish I could find a photo of a field made corner bracket bolted to the rear. Or even some guys sporting a Brit made bracket!

I'm mounting an MP-50 also on my 43 GPW. The majority of research I found found said it was "correct" to be mounted on the side of the jeep on the drivers side. However, I've seen some mounted on the back but that may cause issues with the jerry can, canvas top footman loops. I'm going on the side with brush guards i think.
good luck.

Farrell,

For my SCR-284 installation, I mounted my MP-50 according to the airborne location shown in TM11-2715 (26 Jan 44):

Just misses the Jerry Can and sits right on top of the grab handle.

Saipan June 1944

A similar installation by the USMC for a SCR-608.

This is not an MP-50, but a fabricated base.
