AN/PRC-10 find at Knob Creek (video added)

Post by 95xrcn7 » Mon Apr 10, 2017 7:13 pm

Usually make it to the Machine Gun shoot every other year. This year I found two PRC-6 radios as well as a PRC-10 with all of the web gear and accessories. Cleaned up nicely. Hope to get four PRC-6s running and communicating with the PRC-10.

The PRC 10 should be functional as it is a 1960's depot rebuild.

Radtech:

Thanks for the encouraging advice.
I wondered about that, as it seemed to have both 10 and 10A features.
After the battery is made and initial power up...I'll update the post.

After looking at the data plate a little closer
I noted that the serial number is LBAD-24.

Researching the acronym I found that it is for:

Lexington Bluegrass Army Depot.

Bingo...

The RT 176A is a totally different animal than the RT 176.LBAD is the designation for the Lexington Signal Depot after 1954 it was changed to Lexington Blue grass Army Depot.Pre 1954 units are marked LSD .

How do you plan on powering your PRC-10. I have one that is complete but have never tired it as not sure how to power it. I don't have the battery. Alan

Alan:

I got lazy and ordered a kit off eBay that has the female connector and containment box already made. Inside consists of commercially available battery holders necessary to make up the four voltages. There is also an inverter available on eBay from a gentleman in Italy. It uses a single gel cell as its source. Log onto eBay and search PRC radio or PRC 10...you will see both come up.

I saw a gray wooden box on e-pay that had a do it yourself battery lash up type thing. Was that it?

I thought for that price they could at least solder up the connections but they just said they supplied the wiring diagram.

Alan

It's all what you think your time is worth.

The DC to DC converter powered by a 6 volt gel cell is item 162465600774. The current one is about to end but he will repost another. Take a look at that.

Finished assembly of reproduction BA-279/U.

Fired up LBAD-24...and it works...just as Radtech predicted.

Squelch works, cal tones on each major whole number frequency, dial light turns on and it transmits.

Battery fabrication diagram is from Army Radio Sales website.

How long will that battery setup last until they need replacement?

Mark

I'm not sure...maybe someone else who has used one like this can chime in.

I thought I read that the originals were good for 4 hours depending on how much time was spent transmitting.

Checking the tech manual, for an original BA-279/U, it is actually quite a bit more (roughly 20 hours):
