Hey Mark, deja vu. I have been looking a long time for the nomenclature of the jeep mounted radio that we had in Viet Nam when I was there. I was planning to give that info to you since you were our OS commo geek. So just yesterday I posted on my Facebook Seabee page a request for the info and a guy came back with the radio set you show here. So then I did a google search and this link popped. hahaha...all I needed to do was look on the Gee to begin with. :? hence the deja vu...

Anyhow, we had these radios however they were not in the M-170 style stretch jeeps. They were in regular M38's. I have got to find a photo of one of those dang things. I was told the Navy bought the radio and the Jeep was free. Well...sorta free! :? I am still searching for a photo.

Look here Dave
http://www.hypertools.com/mrc83.html

You are looking for an MRC 83. That is a TRC 75 setup in an M38A1. As with all Marine Corps Radio Jeeps, it ceased being a jeep and became a Radio Set.

Hate to say this but you guys are about 20 years too late. Back in the late '80s I went up to Davalyn in North Hollywood to pick out the best 20 sets he had for Mike Murphy. Davalyn had about 100 of them thyat came out of Barstow. No jeeps but complete TRC-75s. The only person I know who picked one up was Dave Ross and he still runs it on the clatternet weekly and at the MRCG show every May right after Tower Park.

I've heard similar reports Kurt. Although I did manage to find a fairly complete set with many spares about 10 years ago (since sold to a radio enthusiast working on an MRC 87), I think the scrappers couldn't keep away from all of that aluminum. I have spoken to Dave Ross several times and decided that I didn't have the level of radio expertise to ever build a functional MRC 87. The guy I sold the TRC 75 and M170 to several years ago is a radio guy and a jeep guy. He had a far better chance than me to put it all together.

Willy,
The TRC-75 is an HF radio set that outputs either 100 or 1000 watts for long range communications. The MRC-87 is a more encompassing set that has a UHF transceiver in it that uses the AT-195 antenna you referenced so the TRC-68 could talk to an MRC-87 but not to a TRC-75.
