Source for bargain liner for 1942 Brodie Doughboy helmet?

Post by uglyjeep » Sat Jun 10, 2017 10:03 pm

Hello folks,

My son returned from the flea market today with a what appears to be a genuine early WWII "Brodie" or "Doughboy" style helmet that he picked up for 5 bucks. It sure was nice to see him spend his allowance on something so interesting. :) He wants to start getting into reenacting, and we would like to find a replacement liner for this helmet, since it the original is missing. If anyone knows of good source for reproduction helmet liners that fit this model, and that are reasonably priced, I would sure appreciate any advice or recommendations. We are not looking for something perfect in every detail, but rather a good value that my son can get some use and enjoyment out of.

The helmet has a couple of dings in it, but it rather nice overall. It appears to have a stainless trim around the perimeter of the brim. The inside appears to be stamped "C.L./C. 1942" with the number "73" in larger font stamped beneath them. The rivet on the top dome of the helmet is missing, and I assume that it would have originally secured the helmet liner.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.
Cheers,
Daniel

Not sure if this meets your definition of "bargain", but they are considered "spot on". https://pflco.com/militaria.htm#helmit

Sounds like a Brit or Canadian shell, not a US M1917/17A1. We were well into M-1 helmet production by 1942. You can build a reasonable M1917A1 from a bare WWI US shell but the repro. liners are pricy (as Kirk pointed out).

Canadian Mk.II shell (C.L./C. = Canadian Lamp Company of Windsor, Ontario), which are not that common. Does it still have the original paint?

See http://thebrodiehelmet.weebly.com/milit ... anada.html for more info on shell and liner.

Hello,
Thank you for the help everyone. It does appear to have the original paint underneath a light coating of brushed-on army olive. I found a liner that looks like it will fit for about $30 plus postage here...

It may not be correct, but I don't think that my son wouldn't mind.
I really appreciate all of the information, you folks are wonderful.
Cheers,
Daniel

That would be the correct type of liner for this helmet and these were indeed fitted with a brass bolt, not a rivet. Original khaki 2nd model chinstraps (the elasticized strap) are easy to find and cheap.

Prairie Flower Leather Company. Accurate but maybe too much $$$.
Good Luck.
