m1 helmet corking

Hi all just a point , on the m1 helmet, why corking ??? on the out side and what is it thank you colin in France

It was done against glaring/shining when the paint got wet, and it is indeed ground cork. After WW2 this was changed to sand. WW2-era helmets were often repainted post-war with sand mixed in the new paint.
