Hi, all,
I'm a jeep guy, and don't know a lot about German helmets. But I just bought a yellow Norwegian M42 "Industrivern" helmet at a threshing show flea market. It's an original M42 shell, and has an original head-band and liner, but no chin-straps. I paid $150 for it, which I'm sure is too much. However, since original-painted helmets are so expensive, I was thinking I could re-paint it. My questions is this: Should I leave it as-is, for history sake, or are there enough of these out there, that I won't be upsetting any purists if I re-paint it in field-gray and slap a few stickers on it?

Oodles of Norwegian and Czech re-issued WW2 shells still out there and the premium value of this M42 died the day it was refinished. There may be a few diehard German helmet collectors that want postwar re-issue variants but they are a rare breed. I'd refinish and enjoy it.

Doing some research and restore it to the correct specifications based on the maker and lotnumber (from which it can be approximately dated) might be a fun project. Or just slap some Normandy camo on it...
Btw, German helmet shells came in different sizes; each taking 2 or 3 sizes of liners. The larger size shells (64/66/68) are sought after by re-enactors. I have 2 project shells (1 in original color) to finish too.

Thanks, guys! That's what I thought. I'm going to refinish it.

I have no personal experience with this shop, but it gives a good impression of the differences in parts and paints that were used:
