Are we talking the 20 man cookset, or the small detachment cookset? There is a difference.

Ok, so you know the difference.
Are you going to explain the difference and why what he thought might be a 20 man stove might actually be a small detachment stove? No sense talking values until we know what we're talking about...

20 man Cookset:
Small Detachment Cookset:
The Small Detachment Cookset was designed to replace the 20 Man Cookset. The small detachment Cookset was VERY VERY limited issue during Late WW2, hence why we see so many in crates. My research indicates that it was used By the 10th Mountain Division only on more of a field trial. According to the DOD, the stove was in limited procurement until it was standardized in the summer of 1944, and was to take the place of the 20 man cook set. The 20 man cook set was originally design for AA crews and units on detached service to be used with the 10 in 1, and 5 in 1 rations.

Reference Pages 149-153
The reason most people call the Small Detachment Cookset a "20 Man Cookset" is becuase when production of the 20 Man Cookset ceased, the cutlery rolls of the 20 Man Cooksets were inserted into the Small Detachment Cooksets as they met the same QMC spec.
Lastly, I have seen several pictures of components of the 20 Man Cookset being used in several theaters, but have yet to see any pictures of the Small Detachment Cookset being used anywhere. If anyone has pictures, i would love to see them.

Thanks for the explanation. Looks like what I was referring to having seen prices for was the small detachment stove.

Mike,
Inventory it against the QM list (above) to determine how complete it is. Obviously, value depends on:
* Painted finish on the stove and condition of the components
* Vintage and completeness of the components
These '44-'45 stoves were in the inventory a LONG time (= possibility of postwar vintage replacement components) and they are not that rare unless they are minty, complete and all WW2.
I'd say anywhere from $150-$450 depending on the above factors.

I have had two, and both just fell into my hands. The first one was still in the wooden crate. As Jeff said they are out there.

I'll be selling some NOS components (pots, ladle, gas pick-up assemblies, broilers etc.) here on the "G" soon. They are 44'-45' vintage.

I know there kinda hard to find. But not worth $200.00 to me. Thinking around $125-150.00, since its missing some larger items.
