Battery placement-British traffic lantern
Morning!
I recently purchased a British traffic lantern (Mk.2) What I want to find out is how to arrange the batteries/complete the circuit to make it work in the original configuration. I'd like to use it as it was designed as opposed to putting a modern light. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Brandon

Is this it?

The one pic with lid up it appears the batteries are on the right side. 2 d cells so it would be 3 volt. Can you post a pic of yours with a better internal view. They would probably have 1 up and 1 down in series. You can hurt anything if they are put in wrong it just won't work.

That's the one. I know they go in series, but they won't fit from left to right. When I stand them up, they don't sit tight and have a gap top and bottom. Neither one of these ways makes a complete circuit. Also, if you look at the first picture, you will notice a waxy substance at the bottom. This actually prevents the batteries from making a good contact at the bottom of the lantern.

Other than the obvious issue of corrosion for good contact it is a puzzle why the battery won't fit. A D cell is a D cell to the best of my knowledge, never heard of anything else.

I don't understand it either. I almost wonder if there is a piece missing. I have yet to find a schematic on it.

The batteries dont contact the bottom of the lamp.smartsniper308 wrote:That's the one. I know they go in series, but they won't fit from left to right. I think the battery you need is the "Every Ready 800"... this is definitely the one for the WW2 British Army Cycle Lamp - and am fairly certain it was the same for the traffic lantern - but would need to find my lamp to remind myself for certain - these arent made any more.
You used to be able to buy a battery holder in Radio Shack / Maplins, which took 2 x D Cell batteries... but I've not seen one of these for ages either.
Best way to describe it the original... two D cell batteries in a wrapper with one contact on the side and one across the top.
Hope this link works

Re: Battery placement-British traffic lantern
Maybe this article will help - it's not the same type of lamp, but the electrical connections are the same.

Old topic and the link to a pic is gone, but I think this was the lantern. Don't know if price is decent or not but it's available.

Re: Battery placement-British traffic lantern
Thx for the reply Steve. I am looking for the battery only. It would be nice to see how they have modified their battery.
