Making tent poles

Postby Radioman_1943 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:15 pm

Just acquired a small wall tent with no poles. I am thinking of making the two 9 foot uprights and the 9 foot ridge pole myself. Have any of you made your own poles and, if so, do you have any advice?

I made three 9' poles for a lyster bag display a little over a year ago. I took measurements off a pole set at a local surplus store that were not for sale.

I have the measurements and such somewhere around here. Lemme look around and I'll send it to you tomorrow or Monday.

Make the poles in 2 pieces and use a metal pipe in the middle to join them together. This will make them easier to transport.

If you don't have a source for the Octagonal Pole stock... try Home depot or a home improvement store. Look for the round closet pole stock - the poles you hang your cloths on. Then pick up a piece of water pipe or a cyclone fence pole connecter to use as a connecter to make a 2 piece pole.

These guys have a bunch of NOS ones sitting in the corner of the store. They have shipped items before. They are far but have them.

Everything is on the west coast...

Thanks Farrell. I will check them out. If it isn't too much trouble, I would appreciate measurments from yours.

Keenan,

Lucky for you, they are still attached to the side of my jeep from this weekend event! Give me a bit and I'll have 'em!

They are 8' to the top, and the dowl gives another 4".

There is a cabinet maker in my industrial square here that says he can take 4x4s and make them into octogonal poles and can make the ridge pole by rounding one side of a 2x4. With the weight of the tent and the stress from the guide ropes, you will want the poles to be pretty sturdy!

I was in South east Idaho this summer and saw a cabin that had a 50-80 foot fence made out of these tent poles. It was out of this world!!!
