WTB: M2 60mm Mortar Traverse Crank

Post by dantheman » Mon Dec 11, 2017 5:16 am

Looking for the fold out handle and pin for the traversing wheel on a US M2 60mm Mortar. I have other parts I can trade or cash. Let me know if you have one or know where I can find it.

Is not a 60mm and an 81mm the same?

I cannot confirm they are interchangeable between the 60 and 81mm. TM9-3071-1 shows different part numbers. The only part that I am searching for that shares the same part number between the 60 and 81mm is the crank detent, 5012975. I'm fairly certain that the more modern M224 60mm uses these same parts if anyone knows a source...

I am "fairly certain", too. I believe until proven wrong that the 60, late model 81 & 224/s are all the same after WWII. I will look tomorrow at an 81 versus a 60. There are some early model french made 81/s that have a different crank and there are some of these I believe on Ebay. Sometime post war, these numbers including most others, were given a new set of numbers in the new system, but I think that they are still all the same and 224 cranks are still available today through government suppliers. The NSN number for the corresponding part number is 5207728, NY GEAR ASSY, 1015-00-520-7728, 1015005207728, if that is in fact the last number of the item part number on your diagram.

I'm not an authority on this, but check out Relli Technology, Rellitech.com I don't think you will find it in stock, but there are several corresponding items. It will take someone more familiar with the system than me. My point is though, as an purveyor of rare, obscure and hard to find items, do not limit yourself in your search to only the item that you seek to replace. Widen your search to include all traverse assemblies that have incorporated the same part in question.

I will PM you after checking the 81 when it warms up a bit.

Thank you sir I would appreciate that. I have been trying to determine the NSN of the modern equivalent of these parts and have looked through several websites of government contractors who list NSNs. I was hoping to find a drawing and have the parts made but I’ve turned up empty so far. I’ll check the company you suggested. I’m sure there’s someone out there who can make these per the NSN but I don’t need 10 thousand of them, and no one going to make me just one.

11 from 1986-1996. I seem to recall there being a short brass sleeve on the end of the traverse crank to make cranking faster during large deflection changes as well as Traverse & Fire Mission, where you start on a deflection and fire 4 rounds with 3 turns of the traverse crank in between as example.
"Prepare to Traverse Right.(At which point the AG raises his right hand for the Gunner to crank the tube all the way to that side minus 3 turns to set the starting point for the T&F.)
Traverse Right, 4 Rounds 3 Turns. (Gives Gunner the special instructions and gives the Ammo Bearer time to prep 4 HE rounds)
Deflection 2992 (Gives the Gunner deflection to set the gun on for T&F starting point)
Charge 3 (Instruction to Ammo Bearer to pull supplemental charges)
Elevation 0945 (Gives Gunner & AG last part of the fire data to set the gun at the correct range)
Lastly, W/R-When Ready-each gun fires as soon as they are on fire data; or At My Command-guns fire as section or plt once all guns are on fire data and when instructed to by the FDC.
