Excellent job Van!

Once upon a time, I had replicated the illusive steel cross bars for those crates with an ABS plastic vacu-formed over a mold from an original. Wish i had some left to send your way. But I'm sure you'll figure out some impressive replacement!

Excellent attention to the details!

Decided to do some new fabrication work. Shown here are two (of four total) WWII T1ICR .50 caliber wire-bound crates, which held two .50 caliber ammunition cans. I fabricated these crates in the early war style, brown chocolate stain with yellow markings. Examples of the original chocolate brown stain range vary quite a bit ranging from a brown paint to a mild stain, and this is the example I went with. Later crates were bare wood with black stenciling. Also shown is the manual depicting a .30 caliber wire-bound crate. Enjoy! :)

I'd love to get the crate filled with rockets some day. I also have the metal can for the M7 mines and I need to find reasonable repros to fill it with.

Any ideas for inexpensive good looking 60mm mortar rounds?

Your AT mine crate and mines are awesome. Thats a someday for the front bumper of the Willys for me.

I'm thinking a stencil printer is in my future

Great job
Would love to see some pics of your Bazooka crate..any chance?

somehow I missed this post,

I believe that 8 round BZ rocket crate is an old repro made by an long passed gent from Southern California named Jerry Hatzenbuhler. Jerry was a master and made all sorts of repro ord stuff back in the day. He was a WWII vet and had a nicely restored jeep and pack howitzer too. At the time, he only had the modern era (post WWII) hinges and latches - and he used those on his crates.

Image

Here is a photo of that exact crate circa late 90s/early 2000 sitting on Jerry's jeep. (note the knot in the wood under '2.36') My guess is if you check the metal end caps of the BZ tubes inside, they'll be smooth - missing the embossed nomenclature found on originals. Jerry made the tubes as well from mailing tubes. However, in some cases, he cast resin end caps with the nomenclature markings and glued them on the ends.

Also, if you have the June 45 dated TM 9-1900 Ammunition, General manual, you can see that Jerry copied the exact same lot number from the illustrated box.

Image

It is a really nice cate though - no one else has made the 8 round BZ crates. Jerry set the standard for the best stuff at that time.

Good info Rob...the hinges and latches is why I was asking about the date.

well that would be pretty funny if I have his exact crate. The tubes in it don't have any ends

I didn't look closely at the crate when I grabbed it, and I don't know modern from WWII hardware, though now I look at it I see it has phillips head screws not he hardware! I guess I'll be changing those out.

Quest Master wrote:New restoration work - WWII U.S. Ammunition Box Lids. These WWII boxes were all obtained without the original lids, so I fabricated new ones - aged them to match the box and stenciled them to match the LOT number to the corresponding box. Only the brown painted box on the top has its original lid (which I used as a pattern). Examples shown are: TAEGA, TAEAB, TACAL and T1IDR. Enjoy!

I have original wingnuts for this style of crate and if you want to repro the metal strap that goes across the top I have one you can use to copy if you like!

The packing slip is a nice touch many wouldn't have known about, Your restorations definitely match the quality of detail I want when I do a build or or a ordnance restoration, like the 60mm crates I recently made, I spent hours making the exterior markings identical to the originals, aka no word processor used for the type face! Like you, I make my own stencils / silk screens so I can make them more accurate then was available on the market. (I'm meticulous when it comes to the correct size, spacing, color and style etc). Last week I had to make replacement parts for the top of a 1937 m45 mortar fuze for a display. Here are some photos that i posted on another site of that crate build, the fresh pine was the learning curve, the two made with 80yr wood were the keepers. also started to fabricate the correct hardware and yes i need to swap it out for flat heads haha. Anyways Keep it up!

Decided to do some larger ordnance stuff. I previously fabricated the cloverleaf bundles, so now I made some early WWII 105mm R1QCB "lobster crates" for the cloverleaf bundles. Each crate had three fiber tubes and a pair of cloverleaf end caps:
