Square Socket for Octagonal Hub Cap.
Does anyone know where a guy can buy a 2 1/4" socket for the 8 point nut that is on the grease cap of the Ben Hur Trailer. What have you guys used to remove this cap, if you didn't have the socket? Thanks.

Re: Socket Help Needed.
Not sure about 2 1/4" 8 point but OTC makes a 2 3/8" 8 point axle nut socket. Are you sure on the size as OTC does not list 2 1/4" 8 point. Google an OTC 1903 and there are lots of sellers at under $20.00.
Some times they are referred to as double squared or Octagon sockets.

Looking for a socket.
Thanks "RJ" and yep, 100% sure about the size. I just went outside with my tape measure and reading glasses to confirm. I called Grainger along with several other companies about my needs and did not have success. Grainger offered a socket from one of their obscure distributors at the price of $168.85 + tx + shipping. I am 53 yours old, after I restore my trailer it will have a very easy life and probably NEVER need bearing or brake service again in my lifetime.
I think tomorrow I will just build one. I can see in my mind how I should go about it, but we'll see. Thanks again for your input.

I didn't know that was in doubt. Please tell what is 'special' about the required 6 point socket?

Re: Looking for a socket.
Alright, you made me get up and look. My 2 Ben Hurs have 8 point hub caps. And I know I don't have an 8 point socket, yet have never had a problem removing the hub cap. So, I took the Craftsman 12-point 2-1/4" socket I have always used, and it fits nicely. How? It hits points 1 and 2, skip 3, hits 4 and 5, skips 6, hits 7 and 8, skips 9, hits 10 and 11, skips 12. It's not a perfect fit, but for a sheet metal hub cap, it's fine. A quick ebay search shows some inexpensive brands for $25.

Re: Looking for a socket.
Suggestion assimilated and investigated. The operators manual is for OPERATORS not MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL. I have read through the appropriate publications to look for the proper tools for maintenance tools, but couldn't find much in the way of suggested tools for proper use.
Thank You PVT. KIRK GUSTAFSON for your help in finding the socket for me. I won the bid at $19.99 + $13.00 shipping from Arlington Texas. It should be here early next week. Guys like YOU are the ones who are really helpful.

Good day Dave. What was the E Bay Item number on the socket that you bought. I am curious as to what the socket looks like.
Thanks Roger

Re: Looking for a socket. FOUND/PURCHASED. Thanks Retro-Roco.
Glad to hear that you snagged it! Interesting to read above that it MAY have been as easy as using a 12 point socket... It appears that the contact points on the 8-point socket will egage the hub cap on the flats, rather than the corners of the nut. Would seem like that would keep damage to a minimum. But then what do I know. I'm not a mechanic

Here is a picture of the socket, known as a double square. It is 1" drive and an impact, however it will not be necessary to use an impact driver to remove or install it.

Re: Looking for a socket. FOUND/PURCHASED. Thanks Retro-Roco.
Thought I would wait a while to see if the Ben Hur Hub Cap would ring a bell. I have sold a number of NOS G-518 Axles over the years and a handful of the trailers, so far I am only familiar with only the hex 6 point Hub Cap. Was hoping some could relate to the familiar face of the wheel and hubcap on this trailer, but nothing yet.
How many of you have noticed the front hub of 40's 50's Dodge and Ford 1-1/2 and 2 Ton Trucks like the Ford G-8T , F-4, F-6,, etc?
Those trucks have a similar Hex type Hub Cap, and the tool was used by the Army.
The correct tool used by Ford is the 2-3/8" Hex Shape Round Point wheel bearing socket. The same tool the Army used on the Fords, Dodge, Ben Hur G-518 (with hex Nut). There is another part numbered Hub Cap listed for the G-518, I do not have one to compare, would it be an Eight Point?

Re: Looking for a socket. FOUND/PURCHASED. Thanks Retro-Roco. UUUHH-OOOHH.
I want to make a couple of points abundantly CLEAR. 1st. I really do appreciate Retro-Roco's help in finding the socket. He is a good man who is helpful and decent to his fellow restoration enthusiasts. So Kirk, I don't want you feel bad about me buying a socket that won't work, because until we have something in our hot little hands SOMETIMES we don't that it won't work.
2nd. I just know that I'm going to regret following up ben's weak attempt at decent interaction. BUT, I said that I would post pics. of the hub and finally I am doing that now.
The UUUHH-OOOHH comes into play here because even though the socket is EXACTLY what was advertised, IT WON'T WORK .......... The seller told me that it was a socket for tightening nuts on railroad tracks and they are 2 1/4" square. The nuts fit into the square opening in the socket ALL the way. BUT it won't make contact at all with the hub cap on my trailer because its' pattern is octagonal, NOT square. So the socket spins freely. .
I went to Harbor Freight and bought a 3/4" drive breaker bar and an adapter set came home to remove the hub cap and............. AAAAARRRGGHH !!! .
Here are some pics of what I am dealing with. The weather is overcast today so I had to spray some medium gloss black on the hub cap to cut the glare so my camera would take the photo.
TWO AND ONE-QUARTER INCHES.
IRRITATINGLY OCTAGONAL PATTERN. AAAARRRGH!!!
I have used a lot of emoji faces in this thread 'cause ya just gotta laugh at life sometimes. I AM going to build my own socket this weekend. I can see in my mind how I'll do it, so I'll try to take some photos of its' construction if I'm not moving too fast. Otherwise it will just be of the finished socket.
Thanks for looking.

I'm telling you, the Craftsman 12 point 2-1/4" works fine. But I will follow along on how to make your own socket.

Timmmaaaayyyy!! I hear ya brother on your 12 point socket. When I read your post about it, the 'double square' was already in the works and on the way. I really want to try my experiment, 'cause I can see it in my brain. BUT if it fails, I will bit the bullet and go buy the 12 point.
Oh yeah, these octagonal hub caps aren't supposed to exist according to our resident fudge pakker. I guess your two trailers and two I have had are just straight outta the monkeys bu tt. Right??
