In need of some Ben Hur Trailer hardware

Post by Thundercat97 » Tue Jul 11, 2017 9:48 am

Hi Guys,

Do any of you have a source or might have in your parts stash the spring shackle bolts and 2 bushings for a 1 ton Ben Hur Trailer (I was able to find two out the four bushings needed). please let me know if you do have some for sale, my trailer is finally being restored and I need some new parts.

Thanks,
Rob

I'm planning to pick up some bushing stock this weekend, and see if I can make a couple sets on the lathe- I need them for mine as well... If you can send me the ID and OD for a NOS set, I'll see if I can make them for you as well... I'd need the OD in .0001" measurements- so use a vernier micrometer, and a good quality "T" gauge...

I'll probably be giving it a shot next week if I can get the measurements...

Hi Scott,

Here is what I have but not at the ten thousands.....

OD - varied from .876 to .878
ID - .627
Length - varied from 1.720 to 1.740

My measurements come from the two NOS ones I do have and the used ones pulled form the springs.

Thanks
Rob

I forgot to ask- Are these for the spring bushings, or the toggle thing the springs attach to at one end? Just trying ti figure out which I'm making... lol.. I picked up the material today, so I'll try to get started over the weekend...

Ok- Funny- I just found the dimensions for both in the SNL! And they listed them fractional: so I know both, so I SHOULD be able to get them worked out... I'll be cutting the material tonight, and giving a shot over the next few days...

Scott

From SNL-G-518, pg. 32:

Bushing, bz, type 1, 5/8 x 7/8 x 1 3/4 long (Spring leaf no 1) Qty 4
Bushing, bz, 5/8 x 7/8 x 1 23/32 long (spring shackle) Qty 2

( My replacements will be brass bushing stock)

Just by way of an update, I chopped a few 2" pieces from my stock piece of bushing material, and started playing with them on the lathe. They cut rather easily, so I just have to grind a couple more cutters, and I should be able to machine them this week... Also have to make myself an arbor for OD turning...

Still working on them... Heavy load at work this term... But I have the stock on the lathe, and am turning down the O.D. to spec, then will cut to rough length, face to exact length & bore out the ID...

My apologies- these are taking FOREVER... If you still need them, let me know- But at this point, I really don't have a potential target date...

Sorry,
Scott

No problem.... life comes first. My trailer is now done and complete. I will take a spare set when you do get around to it so no rush from my side. Just drop me PM when you have them available.
