WTK Converto value

Post by lt.luke » Wed May 17, 2017 4:02 am

Hello to a new board for me! I have found a Converto trailer. I stopped and snapped some pics, which I will post later today. I'd like to know your opinions. The short answer, I suspect, is it is missing all the hard-to-find parts.

Anyway, keep watch here for pics...

Ok, that's all the pics I took. I need expert opinions on what is there and what is not. Is it worth restoring or is it a candidate for a few parts to help others live?

Early or late?

There's no data plate, is there any other way to get the SN or DOD?

Guy had the "2 piece wheels" but they were too rusted and were tossed. He didn't know if they were the reinforced ones or not.

Luke
Its an earlier model with out lights, that also means it would have standard combats and thin lunette. You can get a repo tailgate for it.
If it was cheap I would own it.

Maybe define cheap, please?

Other than the tailgate, what is missing?

How similar is the lunette casting to an MBT?

As can be seen, there are brake drums but no backing plates. Is this correct? I don't recall seeing a brake handle?

It shouldn't have brakes on it. IMO, it's worth restoring. How does the bed look? Any rust issues? The missing parts can be found.

As a reference, here is another one for sale --> https://cnj.craigslist.org/grd/6108635178.html

I didn't take everything out of it or "dump" it and closely inspect under it. I can. The guy paid 100 for the wheels and tires as mounted and isn't interested in keeping them. I have several M38/CJ wheels and do not need more Ford truck steel wheels, especially overpriced ones...

So I've seen some with a second handle on the front of the trailer, left side. That's the tailgate release. That's missing. Is that the setup this trailer should have? I'd need that, a tailgate, fabricate a rod between the handle and the tailgate pawls, reflectors and a data plate?

The J bolt and wing nut are still there and the dump handle works well.

Keep it coming guys!

Yepper....you'll need the tailgate release handle. Someone on here makes them.

This one will require an early handle. The repo ones are for the latter contract ones. The early had the triangle welded on the tub, later had them cast into handle.

Anybody make them? Or can a "late" handle be converted?

Don't think anyone makes them yet. I need one myself. I would think you could grind off the part that is not needed.

I know really nothing about these. I'm not sure what I'm looking at with regards to a "Triangle". Do you have a picture of what an "early" trailer is supposed to look like?

The asking price on the trailer is in the $300-400 neighborhood, as it sits. I'm starting to think that isn't so bad and that it at least warrants a closer inspection of things like the frame and floor from the bottom.

Tailgates are made, a version of the tailgate handle is made, I've seen weld-on pintle sockets too. Those are the big things I can discern are missing besides the standard type combat wheel?

IMO, all the brackets and pawls to hold the tailgate in place are present, albeit the top ones are bent. That's a positive.

is there a way to determine SN without the data plate? Ie an ACM number like there is on the MBT/T3C trailers?

IMO it's worth the $300 to $400. I think...think the repro tailgates were $350, if any are available.

From what I remember, there were only 6500 of these made. Maybe someone else can support that number or have the correct number.
