WTB One Ton Ben Hur Canvas

Post by jnealsc » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:57 pm

Does anyone know who sells the canvas top for the one ton Ben Hur trailer at a reasonable price? Beachwood is outrageous.

Excellent used or NOS would be best.

Hi, we "ALLIED FORCES" canvas make them the price is £245-00 we can ship to the US but I think the exchange rate at the moment would be a problem for you. I dont know how Beachwoods prices compare.

Howdy
I saw on the CCKW website a listing for a company that has them for about 1/2 of what Beachwood gets. Yes, they are way overpriced. If you can't find it, I could do some back-up research and find them

New Life makes an exact duplicate of the original with accurate leather straps and buckles, complete with correctly attached rope tie downs. The canvas is authentic GI duck and correct color and weight. The one from Beachwood has been made lopsided for years using inferior canvas that is a light shade of OD. I have had several NOS WWII issue Ben Hur covers and they are 100% identical to the ones made by New Life Canvas.

I got a top from Canvas Co and it is great! And considerably less expensive than the New Jersey folks.

Thanks for the input guys. I've requested shipping cost from CanvasCo. If it's not too bad I'll probably go with them. The picture on their webpage looks really nice.

Request pics and study the details, the quality varies.

memphis Equipment, Chambersburg discovered a 1960s dated G-518 Ben Hur Tarp two years ago. It had Black Leather straps as did the other NOS WWII examples that were sent to the better repro canvas dealers. Some will argue that the lighter shade OD they provide is the correct shade. Dark was also used, and an original is shown on the CCKW.org website along with the quality Ben Hur Tarp that resulted from that original. Both are now on trailers owned by Bill Wolf, and another NOS Ben Hur cover is on my own Ben Hur.

Ben Hur Tarp

Post by halifaxgroup » Sun Aug 03, 2008 7:01 pm

At the Dayton Ohio MVPA National Convention there was a really nice above average Ben Hur. I was very impressed with the tarp on this trailer. The owner told me it was made by Friday Canvas in Indiana. About a year later Joe Hall brings his outstanding half ton Dodge Command Car to the Aberdeen Show. Again the canvas is really extra ordinarily nice. Joe told me it was from Friday Canvas. He gave me the phone number. Well in December of 2007 I call and after a number of attempts I get Jim the owner. After a short conversation he quotes me a price of $750. Seems high but the color and fit are worth it. Jim said that he is the only MV manufacturer that uses real government canvas, the other guy’s do not. He said he would have it to me in 30 days. I mail him half up front as requested the next day (December 11, 2007).

On Thursday July 30, 2008 I finally received the tarp. A long story with plenty of reasons why it took him so long. Bottom line, canvas type appears to be no different than the one from Wee Bee on my Dodge WC62. And he stitched a repair in the middle of the top. At the very least he should have let me know there was an obvious defect. And the buckles are bright brass. I took a few pictures but do not know how to post. So if someone emails me I can email them to be put on the G.

An expensive lesson. Paul

Back to my thread...

The shipping from CanvasCo would be 90 pounds slightly half the cost of the trailer top. Also the straps are web not leather. Looks like New Life Canvas has the best top for the money. At that price I'm going to sweat the details and get one that fits correct and has the right strap material.

As I have been justifiably reminded my review of my New Life Ben Hur Tarpaulin is...well it sucks.

I have updated the page with my observations.

In all of the things I have bought to support my OD hobby fix this is one where I truly believe I got my monies worth.

Ordered my top from New Life last week. It will be a three month delay until it is ready but should be worth it. Per Bill's recommendation on his CCKW site (great site even for just the trailer info!) and had her add 6" to the length of the ropes per an original.

Can't wait to get that baby installed. Should have the generator finished and ready to go in the trailer by then (see my other post on the K-52 trailer).
