Re: Reproduction G518 "Ben-Hur" landing leg

I think it's a great thing you're doing for the hobby! You're meeting a big need and I applaud your efforts.
The rubber tire at Harbor Freight is a problem though. It's only rated for 300 lbs and is intended for the small leaf/yard cuttings trailer. Even at that it got a number of poor reviews saying it wouldn't even hold up for that task. I'm afraid the 1300 lbs of a Ben-Hur would cause it to fail quickly.

Thanks again for the hard work producing these yokes!!

Is there any progress yet on drawings for the landing leg weldment; I could have this made up in a snap if I had a drawing; This would be a simple fabrication; I could have the parts cut on a water jet;

Please let me know;

Thanks;

Sean

101st,

In the event Fox is unable to assist I suggest you find someone nearby you with a landing leg you can measure, trace, make impressions off of, photograph, and reproduce. However, I am sure Fox will do his best to come through. 8)

Keep in mind the landing leg does not support the entire weight of the trailer by itself. Most of the weight is supported by the trailer axle with it's two 750-20 tires. The calculated load on the landing leg tire is approximately 220 pounds for an empty trailer and 725 pounds for a fully loaded trailer, using 1300 lb. for the trailer empty weight and 3300 lb. for the payload (according to published specs for the Ben Hur trailer).

The 14735-1551 solid rubber "flat free" tire and wheel from Northern Tool has a rated load capacity of 500 lb, according to their specs. This is more than enough to support an empty trailer. If it actually has a maximum load carrying capacity of 750 lb (the load it can carry without failing), it should have enough capacity to support a fully loaded Ben Hur trailer as well.

Farrell,
I want to commend you again on the work you've done fabricating these MUCH needed landing legs for Ben-Hurs!! They turned out fantastic and although I was one of the fortunate ones that found a "take-off" landing leg they were impossible to locate for many!! Your efforts have helped many save these worthy projects!
