Why 37mm?

Post by philipgslattery » Wed Aug 10, 2016 2:50 am

For some time I have been wondering why most of the pre-war and early war artillery and tank guns, used by multiple countries such as the U.S., Germany Japan ,Sweden etc. were 37 mm..
Can someone shed some light on this. Was there some common ancestor or denominator?
Thanks
Philip

Was, IIRC, a result of the St. Petersburg Convention. In any event, there arose an agreement which prohibited explosives in projectiles designed for use against personnel, as opposed to material. Was apparently then determined by some country that 37mm was large enough to normally not be directed at personnel alone, and thus ok to make the projo explosive. The rest of the world followed, of course. HTH.

Thankyou for the interesting reply. The Wikipedia link below relates to the St Petersburg agreement. It's fascinating to see what was agreed although practice appears to have been different.
