Recommendations for recoil oil?

Post by waterdawg2004 » Wed Apr 20, 2016 6:50 am

What are you using for recoil oil in your gun? What is a a good mineral oil to use for recoil system in 4.5 inch Brtish Howitzer? The mineral oil specs in my hand book for 4.5 Howitzer specifies "mineral oil, hydraulic buffer" which I assume is not the same as drug store mineral oil. It does not give a viscosity spec. I was going to try Mineral Castrol Oil Hydraulic System Fluid For Jaguar Bentley Rolls Royce that I found on eBay because it is for older British cars. Thanks for any advice.

I can get that for you in original package. Have a good source for that. Friend of mine said he bought some still in the original packaging from WW2.

For the nitrogen type systems that are in pack howitzers 1o5mm howitzers and 155mm and three inch guns it is definitely not simply hydraulic jack oil. You can use oil that goes in aircraft struts in the landing gears. Regular Hydraulic oil is way thicker. Recoil rate isn't correct Shell makes the oil for aircraft industry. The description of the spec specifically mentions ordnance use. Aerospace industry uses a lot of nitrogen over oil systems

37mm anti tank gun 57mm gun etc can use regular hydraulic oil but not the nitrogen systems
If your gun doesn't leak oil, it's time for a bigger gun.

This gun does not use nitrogen. It has a giant spring like on the smaller guns. I decided to go with 32 wt hydraulic oil. Thanks for the input.

Are you actually going to fire projectiles with it? I have one nice HE shell for it in my collection. That is quite a large round.

I am going to try and shoot bocce balls out of it. They are cheap and will not harm the rifling. I have 6 original projectiles also but I will not shoot them because I want to sell this gun and want them to go with the gun. Thanks.
