1937 U.S. 6" Shell restoration - w/ pics

Post by Quest Master » Mon Jan 11, 2016 9:44 am

Figured I'd show off another recent restoration I've done, a 1937 U.S. Army 6 Inch Coast Artillery HE Shell (inert). This was recovered from Oahu, Hawaii in the 1990's. I couldn't find a picture of another to go off of...so I used a picture in a 1940 manual as reference. The painting and stencil was done by me. Enjoy! :)

Nice projectile and great paint job, but unfortunately, they do not belong together. What you have is a US Navy 6"/47 caliber Mk34 High Capacity (HC) projectile, fired from the Mk16 naval gun that was in service aboard US Navy light cruisers starting in 1937. The US Army High Explosive (HE) shell for the seacoast gun is similar, but has differing dimensions, profile, fuze well, weight, markings, etc. If you look at the copper drive band, you'll most likely see 6-IN MK34, along with US Navy anchor proof marks (the army projectile would have a flaming bomb or crossed cannons proof mark), and a date of 1937. Also, if you look at the base of your projectile, you will see an allowance for a base fuze. The Mk34 projectiles were both nose and base fuzed, whereas the HE seacoast projectile only had a nose fuze. One other significant difference between the two rounds, is the fact that the seacoast projectile uses a bag charge, and your Mk34 projectile would have used the brass Mk4 cartridge case. Both rounds would have been separate loaded ammunition, with the Mk4 case utilizing a cork or bakelike closing plug to contain the propellant in the cartridge case.

On the rotating band (obdurating band or drive band) there is an Army crossed cannons inspection stamp not a Navy anchor inspection stamp.
Thanks, but it is an Army pre-war shell.

Please post some photos of the markings on the drive band. This sounds very interesting. I've never seen a shell that looks like that, with markings that you described. My interest is definitely piqued!

U.S. Army "Flaming Bomb" inspection stamp. Sorry, I thought it was crossed cannons. It is still Army though, not Navy.
