What is this? Supposed prototype

Post by artillerydan » Thu Mar 19, 2015 11:52 am

Well this one has me stumped. I have not looked through all my books yet but.....
Looks right, feels right kinda right..... but..... I would say never mind the marking as this has been in a collectors hands

Kinda like the US 76mm T124 AT gun that saw limited production...

An M-6 gun from an M-24 Chaffee, sitting on a carriage of some kind. Something smells wrong to me, but I'm not an expert on field pieces. I see a traverse mechanism, but nothing for the elevation?

It looks to good to be scabbed together. like the assy welded to the breach for recoil, the reinforcement rivets at the welds where they "shortened it"?

Maybe what I am trying to figure out is if anyone else recognizes the carriage/ shield components, then decide if this is a scab job from a foreign carriage with some US stuff or????

I just did not want to write this off until I was sure it was some guys parts pile of dreams.

I also would have expected this to have a "direct fire" gun sight not a mount for the M12 series telescopes

I also fell this may be a true B25 M6 set up. But the breech ring is not an M6 like I would expect since it does not have the two big screws in the back.

5 min in person would probably answer this. :x

It's well made but might be a salad. I don't see how this gun would function like it should. The recoil setup looks incomplete and the bottom sleigh looks to be 2 piece?
I don't see any way of locking the trails when I firing position.
Also the the breech lever seems to be crude and out of place. Couldn't put a gunners quadrant on the breech block with the lever in the way.

I think it's a bitza trying to look like a 3" M5 AT gun. Some of it is too good to be home made but I'm not sure of it's origins. Clearly an ex- M24 75mm gun but what else? Carriage plate is Bofors!

Yes that was my point with this. Simple answer is it ain't right but enough of it is to make you think. Maybe I just want it to be something so I can justify buying it :) . Obviously the 75mm M6 made this more appealing since it was M24. :?
