Help: projectile identification - 5" pre-WWII Navy

Post by Quest Master » Sun Feb 15, 2015 4:15 pm

Need help with the identification with a pre-WWII or WWII 5" Navy Armor Piercing Shell (not casing). It is an AP projectile with a threaded hole in the bottom for what I believe is a base detonating fuze. The rotating band (also known as obdurating or rotating band) is copper and stamped: 5"A.A.-COM.MKXXVII MD-13 LOT NC.16 -37. The best I can come up with is 5" Anti Aircraft Mark 27 Modification 13. The 37 may be the year. Couldn't find any info on it.
Any idea on the identification of this projectile? Pictures would be helpful too as I'd like to restore it.
Thanks,
Van
