FS: Pre-WWI/WWI Leather Arty Sight/Quadrant Box (75mm)

Postby AZ Jeff » Sat Dec 11, 2010 10:31 am

Here's a very cool Leather Sight/Quadrant Box for the WWI era 75mm Cannon...

Image

This heavy duty gem measures 13" tall x 10.5" wide x 3" thick. It is made of russet leather (now suitable red/brown with age and use). There is a heavy brass/bronze spring-loaded bracket at the bottom (it pulls down) and a leather closure strap...

Image

The interior is made with thin russet leather trimmed wood retention blocks. The cut-out fits the Gunners Quadrant. The right side supports retain a Sight Mount. As noted in follow-on posts below, this was for the U.S. 75mm cannon.

Overall condition is VG+ with some storage/age abrasions. Since this photo was taken I have meticulously removed the verdigris from the brass parts (you're welcome... :D ). Leather is fine -- no rot. Some minor stitching loose. Not "mint" but very solid.

Price is $150 plus postage from SE AZ . Please PM direct if you are interested. PayPal accepted and preferred. Thanks for looking!

What does the back look like, does it have 2 rings or leather loops?

Thanks for asking -- there are eight holes arranged vertically, four up the left side, four up the right side, spaced 2-1/4" apart and 1" in from the sides. Some still have the remains of brass posts/rivets and there may have been brackets retained by those rivets (faint evidence impression).

It is very similar to my Model 1897 French 75 Howitzer gunners pouch. I would think yours is for a cannon/howitzer. Possibly a US M 1902-05 3Inch Field Gun, or another type.

It attaches with the two rings on the top and the spring/clasp at the bottom attaches to another attachment point.

You can see the two upper attachment points on the (R) side of the shield and the single lower attachment, I did not have it attached in this pic.

Certainly a similar construction and probably the U.S. version of that case. The M1 (or M1918) quadrant provision fits without the case in this example and the "tubular" accomodation hints of a post type sight.

This is a reproduction sight, but it looks similar and is about the same size as the one that was used... Wish I could help out more, but this is about as much knowledge I have in this area....sorry...

BTT over a year later and now $25 cheaper ($150). At this rate it'll be "free" in 2018...
