Hi Rich,

CCKW engine paint color seems to be one of those topics that has always generated a lot of debate.

As you probably know, the official name for this color is: Wet Olive. In contrast to the lusterless OD on the body, it had a glossy finish. I think most would agree on this, based on the numerous WWII era photos where the reflections of engine components are readily apparent. And, most would also agree that the color is definitely green, but here is where the consensus goes off into the ditch...

Some strongly feel the color looks like some of these posts on this site:

The color of the GMC engine paint sold by Jim Carter parts is shown in several pics in that thread. It seems to be used by many restorers as you look through pics on the web. This is the color that I had thought they were painted until I ran across this post on the OldGMC trucks forum - which seems to paint an entirely different picture (no pun intended):

I think you may have to register to view that post, but it is definitely worth the look. The green they show, that came from a claimed to be original clutch inspection cover shows an entirely different shade of green.

Another post on that site shows a different engine with almost exactly the same color on the valve and lifter covers.

I know that some people reference the color of unopened engine service parts. But who is to say exactly when and where they were produced? If they were not manufactured in the engine plant, who is to say that they are the same color?

I guess the only way to know for sure would be to see an actual color WWII photo of a CCKW engine. Have yet to see one of those yet.

Best Regards....
