International M-5H-6 thinking about buying it.

Post by Cameleer » Fri Jan 13, 2017 6:20 pm

The person that owns this International M-5H-6 wants $3,000 for it or he's going to scrap it.
This truck has been well kept, runs good and has many spare parts.
A lot been changed on the truck, but it was done with high quality.
It's near by where I live, so thinking about getting it mostly just to save it.
So what do you guys think?
I have the room to keep it and I do have a friend that could use it on his ranch.

That's pretty sweet and decent priced for a rarer truck

What can you tell about the engine and transmission. It is different than original. The M-5H6 is a wonderful truck, but some driveline parts and Brake parts can be hard to find and will be pricy. This truck was not as numerous as the CCKW and OEM IH parts can take a while longer to find. There are a few IH 6X6 owners that may have a handle on spare parts and will be able to brief you on what to expect. Wheel Brake parts are unique to the IH and are very expensive. Same goes for the Eaton Gear Boxes as Bantam Crane incorporated many of the IH running gear parts on their Post War 40's 50's Crane carriers.

If you can save it, please do so! The old Internationals were a well built truck, but it seems there were far fewer that made it into civilian hands and then managed to survive the following years. It doesn't really matter how much has been modified, sometimes the changes are as interesting as the original piece of equipment. Do you know if it still has the original engine and transmission? Even the pump engine on the left framerail is interesting on its own.

Has many spare parts. 2 complete rear axles, lots of axle shafts and drive shafts, u-joints, transfer case, rear leaf springs and a beam, brake shoes, steering wheel, windshield parts and many more.
The engine and running gear are original, engine starts and runs very good, radiator looks almost new, wiring could use some work, body is very nice almost no rust, master brake cylinder may need rebuilding, brake pads are about 3/4 good, don't recall the name but it has an air type power steering added, tires are dry but OK for slow or off road use.
Was told top speed is about 30 mph.
They were using this at construction sites and kept it very well maintained, been parked now for around 5 years.

I didn't even think about the engine in the photo not being the truck engine. Shouldda had that cup of coffee first.
This is a great start on what is a super clean truck. It is not beat up like many retired M5H6 Internationals.

I called the trucks owner and I'm buying it.
The mods where done so well you would think it came from the factory as a water truck.
All the mods are first class.

Thanks for saving another "old soldier"! My wife and I are working on selling our house here in the great frigid north and relocating to the west coast. If the truck would ever be for sale in the next few years I just might be interested! :D
Thanks again

Nice! I missed out on a super clean 4-2 for 1000.00 in Moab Utah!

How hard to find a Cargo bed for one of these?

Almost impossible to find beds for them. The M-5h-6 some came with wood beds and some with steel beds.
Most of them were removed and replaced with other types of beds a long time ago.

Nice looking M-5H-6. Looks like they may have incorporated the (canvas) top bows into that sheet metal top? Very well done if so. Now you just need to pony-up another $3k for the ten+ 8.25-20 NDT tires, tubes and flaps :D.

Here are some more photos showing the truck and some of the spare parts.
Luckily the tires should last for a long time, I don't think there's a whole lot of money need to run it.
The big question is, what am I going to do with an big old water truck. I have some ideas I'm working on.

I got the M-5-6 home today, got my next door neighbor to move it for me.
This was the first day that I could really go over her from top to bottom.
Did a little work on her today, still need to find out what's wrong with the brakes.
Also the carburetor works but should be gone through.
Here's some more photos taken today.
