Post by Prop Trailer » Wed Nov 09, 2016 5:37 am

I am looking for a picture showing original WW2 bumper markings and hoodvin number for an Autocar CLOSED cab U7144T truck tractor in the North-West European ETO.
Any unit-picture is welcome!!

Thanks, Prop Trailer

I gave it to my friend, but a real neat unit history I found was the 425th Quartermaster Company (Tire Repair). All they had were tractor/trailers and drove around picking up tires needing repair. There were many photos of tractors (I couldn't tell you if they were Autocar or Federal, but were one or the other) hauling large loads of tires back to their repair center. They were either an Army or Army Group-level unit, I can't remember which. Their history told about repairing 10's of thousands of tires. He owes me a copy so I'll ask him if you are interested.

John thanks for your message. I am indeed interested, please ask your friend to scan a copy if possible. Have been lurking all day yesterday on internet, but did not find any picture in ETO of a closed cab Autocar with Hood VIN and bumper marking visible....
These closed cab trucks have not been seen (so far at least) during Red Ball or ABC Express Supply routes.
We have an open U7144T too, and own also three semi's, being a 10 Stake and Flatbed trailer, a 2000 Gallons Gasoline trailer (both were performiong during Red Ball) and a Shoe Repair Trailer.
Guess the stake trailer could be loaded with worn tires we have saved from tire-changing activities on our other trucks in the last 10 years.....

Looking forward hearing from you,

many thanks, Robert (Prop Trailer)

Robert,
I just stopped by and spoke with him the other day. He is a pretty busy guy in a very busy restoration shop. He will dig it out and I'll scan it for you. It might take some time, but your post had me wanting to get the copy and re-read it. FYI, one reason I gave him this book is his interest in the support units from WWII, and one of the other things I found and gave to him a few years back. A few years ago at the Hershey antique car show there was a WWII tire patching kit- bigger than a footlocker, with all the tools and repair pieces for doing tire repairs. I'll have him dig that out as well and get photos of it.

Splendid, cannot wait to see the results.
Have been looking for Quarter Master 425th Company; could find a Ordnance 425th Company / Tire Repair in Northern Ireland during the War, but no pictures as yet.........

Robert,
It has been nearly 10 years since I gave him the manual, so I may be mis-remembering. But I thought it was QM, not ORD. We will both know ASAP.

Robert,
I haven't been by his shop since last time. I'll call him today and see if he found it. Both of us are really busy. I'll let you know.

I was like to see pictures of the tractors in ww2. I got the m426 IH which was use in the redball express and the berlin airlift, I had a friend who drove the m426 , hauling gasoline in Europe, but during the winter they drove the federals. His tractor and him are pictured in the mvpa 2005 membership Directory.
I have got four running halftracks, plus 5 ton ww2 semi-truck,1943 willys jeep and other ww2 vehicles, plus a lot of parts to trade on. Wendell in Tn.
