1962 BERLIN CRISIS

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Jul 24, 2016 4:31 am

Some Army NG units on Annual Training were suddenly called to Federal Service, many units around the country having brand new M-49C 2 1/2 Ton Reo 6X6 refueling trucks went back home without them. Many of these 2-1/2 Ton Tankers were shipped directly to Ft Carson Colorado for assignment to activated National Guard Armored Battalions with M-48's. ANG units with F-84F Thunderstreaks were also called to active duty.
The 33rd Armor from Maine was activated with their M-48's and sent to Germany.
Maine National Guard has two Master SGTs named Joseph A. DeRoche, one was from the 33ed Armor, the other was from the 262nd Engineering Battalion. Both were full time National Guard Technicians, both were born in July 1916, and the pay for the Active Duty MSgt Joseph A. DeRoche kept getting mixed up with the other Joseph A. DeRoche who was a full time Battalion Maintenance Supervisor with the Army Guard in Bangor. Both were good friends of mine.
