Wheel studs WWII

Post by Hanselandgretel » Sat Feb 27, 2016 5:28 pm

I have a question about the nuts on the rear wheel "holder onners" for the CCKW and 1 1/2 ton Chev and other big trucks of WWII. I know the first "nut" (holder onner) that fits over the wheel stud is different from WWII to M series, the WWII one being flat on the top and the M series having the dent in the end.

My question is about the nut that goes on the "holder onner". Is there a different one used WWII to M series? I have some nuts that are marked L or R on the face that the wrench goes on and some are marked L or R on the edge that faces outward. Are they both correct for WWII trucks or is one type WWII and one M series?

Thanks for your help.

Inner and outer rear wheel nuts are the same on G-506, G-508 and M-Series 2-1/2 ton with duals. Try them and you will be happy.

I don't recall seeing the letter L or R stamped on the narrow edge facing you but will have a look through what I have here. I have seen the letters L and R stamped on the flats of the hexagon and the words LEFT and RIGHT stamped on the narrow edge. Both these types were produced during WW2 so are period correct. As to which vehicles were originally fitted with which nut??? I don't have any M series parts here, those trucks are a rarity in this country.

I have a bucket with about 50# of WWII G-506/G-508 and M-Series lug nuts saved for my customers and friends.

Some of the outer wheel nuts have the letter R or L stamped on the narrow edge, some have L or R stamped on the wrench flats and some have the words LEFT or RIGHT stamped on the narrow edge. I believe that any and all are correct for WW2.

The majority lug nuts used on CCKW and G-506 appear to have been manufactured by Budd, and by Motor Wheel I made sure that the front lug nuts on my CCKW are Budds. Every time I remove a wheel, I try to find fresh looking Budd nuts.

Thanks to you all! I will use whatever I want and wait for the "Jeep police" to prove me wrong. As John Bizal says, "show me your truck"!
