Re: RAEME M816
Thanks Ian.
They were both M543's which was the previous ('Nam) generation of Med wreckers though not sure where the air filter (RH Mudguard) or exhaust went (RH cab front)!

Re: RAEME M816
I have been sent a pic from a former Recy Mech of his M816, showing a 179 series ARN.
http://www.remlr.com/... ARMY REGISTRATION NUMBERS '179-000' to 179-999. However this schedule of ARN's does have gaps unaccounted for -592 to -853.
This picture also shows the US issue method of suspended towing with standard Towbar[US term] (Holebone/A frame [UK], towbar-motor vehicle [AU]) and Whiffle tree [US/UK] (bar-lifting[AU]) before the Holmes gear[US/UK] was issued due to the Mack introduction mid '70's.
(There was also a purchase in '71 of the twin boom International wreckers in this 179 series - 114 to 159, though I didn't think these came along until much later to replace the M816's but before the Mack R600 wreckers with the rear 'Stinger' hydraulic lift - as pic in the 'Trailer board' conversation.)
The later 1973 purchase of 34 wreckers seemed to have been issued with white registration plates with green numbers as seen in pictures above/below (depending on how you view this thread)..
If anyone can shed a little light on this to clarify....
So there was an earlier purchase, in 1971 of M816's. Somewhere in the -620 range. These had white numbers on black registration plates. So far the size if the purchase is unknown as the REMLR register does not include these: This picture also shows the US issue method of suspended towing with standard Towbar[US term] (Holebone/A frame [UK], towbar-motor vehicle [AU]) and Whiffle tree [US/UK] (bar-lifting[AU]) before the Holmes gear[US/UK] was issued due to the Mack introduction mid '70's.

Re: RAEME M816
David,
Howard was looking for markings and i do believe a reproduction ARN number plate. Did you attend Corowa this year and if so (or not!), do you know the name of the guy who was doing repro number plates and marking stickers/marking masks or templates?
Howard, if David is unable to shed light I shall ask about as seeing this thread just reminded me of both him and your want for the plate.
Well done on the work so far!
Ian.

Re: RAEME M816
Hi Ian
I was at Corowa this year but have no recollection of anyone doing vehicle signage so can't help you there.
When I was getting a Studebaker US-6 ready to go to Normandy in '94 Dave McCallum offered to make up the 'tac' signs for me as having been a wrecker crewman he had a good working knowledge of unit markings as they could be asked to go anywhere at any time to provide assistance. I was happy to let him do it.
Mike Cecil also supplied very helpful information. Being in the US he is easily overlooked but has a wealth of knowledge and reference material re all aspects of Australian Army equipment and history.

Re: RAEME M816
Oops - hadn't noticed recent activity here!
Motto - I have spoken to Mike Cecil and yes, he is an awesome source of reference. He managed to get me a period Gov paint sample so I am all set with the 'green'! Also had some pom friends from home went down to Champ Camp this year - they were doing a little digging re rego plates.
I now have proper, truck sized TAC plate stickers - got them from Oz..
Re Normandy - I was there in '94, riding shotgun on a Ward laFrance with the same guy that went to Champ Camp. Looks like I have a similar invite to the 75th in 2019 though I think I'd be pretty safe to bet his Armoured Pacific and Trailer won't be ready...

Re: RAEME M816
Found another pic.
ARN doesn't appear on REMLR listing.. I wonder how many others there are in the purchase series.
Second one far left, maybe 179-604?

Re: RAEME M816
Two more inservice pics from Recovery Mechanic - Craig Burrowes. Reg number seems to be in the 25-4_ _ series.
"Caution Air Brakes" not commonly seen, but LHD warning is.
Still need to source the heavier pintle hook for the top of the suspended tow bracket. Seen in this one inside the back on the passenger side, is the protection for the reg plate lamp cable - probably a piece of 1" angle, running to the outside then presumably down to a hole in the bed floor and then to the rear lamp cluster.

Re: RAEME M816
Just received this pic of an M816 stored in the Canberra War Memorial Annex.
Unfortunately, it is not in the public access area.
There is a description card in front of it that states that there were a total of 77 M816s purchased between 1972 and 1990.
Modifications/differences noted:-
Different bonnet bulge for Jake brake.
Hanger strap from LHS mudguard - presumably for a CES tray or Jerry cans.
"Rookie" bars with small bracing.
TAC sign holders missing. One TAC sign "88" painted directly on mudguard.
Winch chain and hook missing.
Cupola tilt hoops but no cover.
Drivers mirror seems to be a later replacement.

Re: RAEME M816
88 is my Unit ~ 101 Field Workshop ~ in Vietnam 1966-67
I believe 106 Field Wksp continued using the same 88 TAC sign when 101 was replaced in mid 1967.

Re: RAEME M816
and another one - hopefully being restored. Trying to get more info.
Of note - rear bed/crane appears to be the correct colour, which makes me think it's being restored - tank and air filter in primer?
The side marker/turn light guard is there - in a very vulnerable position that one would assume would have long since been damaged/removed, considering the changes/heavy civi use, to the front end....
So the bracket on the back of the crane seat, instead of the fire extinguishers, could (?) be for a small toolbox. I know of one other that had that mod when in service.
Ground spades on the crane boom (often missing) was pretty standard for RAEME wagons, I have even seen a load of US Army ones that were modified that way. Some stowed spade rearward, though that makes them stick up higher.
