WHY THE AUTOMATIC FEATURE?

Post by Joe Gopan » Sat Oct 03, 2015 6:09 am

The 50's M-Series introduced some new features for the GI truck driver. The M-135/M-311 2-1/2 Ton 6X6 had a 4 speed Hydramatic Transmission, the M-35 Reo/Studebaker 2-1/2 Ton 6X6 had a Synchronized 5 Speed Direct Spicer Transmission, The M-54 International 5 Ton 6X6 had a Synchronized 5 Speed Direct Spicer Transmission. All had an automatic front axle drive feature where the front axle was engaged based on rear wheel slippage.
This was intended for ease of training and to also make driving easier for the drivers. These trucks were more comfortable than their WWII counterparts that they replaced and actually fun to drive.
