MY CCKW

Post by Joe Gopan » Thu Jun 11, 2015 12:43 am

"Old Soldiers Never Die" holds true even for a CCKW restoration, there are a lot of good memories that are rekindled for those that have a restored CCKW or MV to drive. I have been around CCKW's and the Veterans who were associated with them since the end of WWII. A ride in my CCKW brings alive the everyday sounds of CCKW's and other military vehicles operated at Dow Field just across the street , memories of GI's dressed in HBT's, sounds of Reveille and Retreat, WWII and Korean War Aircraft, Armed Forces Day Airshows, my Army instructors, friends and mentors who were WWII Veterans, trips to the PX and Commissary at Dow Field with my relatives whose loved ones were serving overseas and our busy post war business with all the GI's and hangar flying that left me awestruck by their WWII tales that were still fresh in their young minds. It was just about this time in 1945 that the sights of returning GI's who lived in my neighborhood were almost everyday, an Airman in Class A's wearing AAF issue sunglasses, carrying his B-4 Bag, a soldier carrying his duffle bag on his shoulder, a Marine in dress blues, all neat and trim in their uniforms that they would wear for the last time. It all comes back with a CCKW ride, even more so today upon learning one more of my WWII Veteran neighbors that I so vividly remember returning home has silently passed away.

Thank you, Ben, for your knowledge and insight of these old vehicles! It sometimes gets forgotten that they'd be nothing more than pieces of iron if it weren't for the men and women who used them, whose lives depended on them to do what needed to be done.
It always saddens me to hear of the loss of yet another veteran, especially so when they're a personal friend. Sorry for your and our loss, may he rest in eternal peace.

Ben what you wrote, is what saving these old work horses is all about. Keeping the memories of W.W. 2 U.S. Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines alive.
A few years ago at the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade, I was helping two W.W. 2 veterans board my Command Car when another came out of the church's lunch room. He was all bent over and walking with a cane. As soon as He saw the C.Car, He exclaimed as He straightened out to be over six feet tall , "Command Car, Command Car, I wanna ride in the Command Car!! Can I ride with you fellas?" How could I say no, I couldn't.
Those three men didn't know each other but had the best time for 45 minutes enjoying each others company and stories. I was blessed with the gift of just being there.

Very well written Ben. My grandfather was a veteran of World War II. Truly great men.

This hobby has been good to me, very rewarding and always very exciting. Am fortunate to have spanned the years beginning at the end of WWII thru present with the opportunity to have had exposure to the WWII MV's while they were still in military service and to have been surrounded by the veterans who operated and maintained these vehicles and also lucky enough to have been trained to maintain these MV's by enthusiastic US Army instructors who never tired of sharing their WWII and Korean era MV experiences.
It all comes alive with the flip of the ignition switch of my restored MV's.

Ben, when are going to write the book. Please don't take all the detailed knowledge with you...

I tell (jokingly) that people that have horses that my HMVs stop eating when I shut the ignition off and I don't have to shovel the stall!

The book? That's me, and the pages are filled with pleasant memories of MV's and all that is associated with them including those "Dr. Deuce CCKW Retrival Missions" that you have posted for all to see. The name of the game is "fun", no more, no less.

Before those who made WWII history make their final journey, take a trip around town to the favorite coffee shops and restaurants in your MV for a few days, there are chances that a WWII Veteran is out for his morning cup of coffee and will come over and share a story or two. I catch a few at old DOW FIELD HANGAR #1 in my MB or CCKW and make new friends.

My CCKW is stomping at the bit, It did not get much exercise in 2019, fired it up for first time in 2020, ethanol free is the way to go. What I am now realizing are the few veterans with CCKW and other WWII MV recollection. Won't be long before history revision erases the true history associated with maintaining, operating and reliving the smells and sounds of WWII MV's that so many WWII/Korean war veterans rode off to war in.

I took the 43 CCKW closed cab that I have owned for 40 years out yesterday for the 1st 2020 run and I took 'Pat' the 45 open cabbed CCKW out today! God I love these trucks! I would drive one or the other, or one of the WW2 Chevys out every day if I could!

We is two "Old Fart" GMC owners on a mission to share trucks that made WWII transportation history. Steve and I remember "Durable Jones" from way back when.
Steve's Open Cab used to belong to Pat Whitehouse, a retired Delta pilot who flew the restored Memphis Belle B-17 around the country, Stere's Closed Cab CCKW was in the movie "The Joe Kennedy Story" that featured a B-24 now owned by Kermit Weeks. The B-24 was former Indian Air Force and flew maritime patrol from 1948 thru 1968 before being purchased by David Tallichet and returned to the US in early 70's.

Steve has owned his CCKW for over 40 years, and I have owned mine 37 years. Seymore at Supreme Surplus picked it out for me from Danish Army surplus in '83.

I am going to have 'Pat' painted in white on the lower cowl drivers side of Pat in honor of him. Nice guy, good friend.

I never did that with the 43 that I have had for 40 years. Maybe 'Old Fart' would be appropriate for that CCKW....
