Hello,

My friend is stranded in GA coming from MI on his way to FL with his deuce. A belt broke and he is stranded because it put a 3" gash in the radiator, If you can help.If you can help I can get you his number, his name is Greg.

Hello, hope you are not stranded on the side of the road still...looks like "Murphy" is riding shotgun...

Depending on how many tubes are damaged in the 1st or 2nd rows of the radiator it is possible to remove the fins surrounding the tubes and exposing the tube itself with a pair of needle nose pliars, then remove enough fins to expose 1 to1 1/2 inches of tube and proceed to "Twist/Roll" the exposed tube to have a "pinched off" effect on the damaged tubes. The radiator is already damaged, so you are just stopping flow in the individual tubes...

After you do this you may try to goop up some RTV in area affected, most radiators are no longer serviceable when 25% of the tubes are blocked or damaged. once you get to a safe place to service the radiator a decent shop can break down the radiator a Solder the individual tubes up to stop coolant flow in those single tubes. I don't recall if that style radiator is a bolted on top/bottom reservoir tanks or they are soldered on tanks...also if the radiator cap is loose it won't build as much pressure in the system, but it may run hotter due to a reduced boiling point of the coolant. 1 pound of pressure increases the boiling point by 3 degrees F.

Thank you, I passed on the info. Unfortunately he is still stranded. They worked on it all night but didn't get anywhere, and he said he thinks a new radiator is the only way. A semi tractor gave him a tug off the road.

Getting a tow is going to be expensive if he has to, it's not just the deuce.

If possible find closest radiator shop to see if they have field repair services, or a heavy equipment repair shop that will make a service call...if they can take a picture of the damaged area that would be helpful too in evaluating the extent of the damage. The tubes are usually copper, so the metal is soft to work with...

Depending on the mechanical skill of the operator, He/She may only need a pair of needle nose pliars and a pair of Diagonal cutters (dike's)

There zoom in link at the bottom of text, I have used this technique before and the old ford tractor at my hose has a "band-aid" like this and it still doesn't leak after 2 years. It is very common to see patches like this on Heavy Equipment to keep the machine running until the radiator can be pulled for a more permanent repair.

Thanks for the info, apparently the damage is significant. He and a couple others have tried to seal the gash to get him moving to FL again without any luck.

I've been relay'ed that at this point he needs a replacement.

O.k., sorry to hear that happened.

Not knowing the area, I would offer the idea of the local Cat dealership...not the cheapest place, but an option. They might be able to point him in the right direction in regards to repair, or fix it if they pull it out of the truck. Best of luck to them, hit up the local Surplus vehicle shops...

Thank you! I think someone over there must have helped him, as I heard it was posted there and it looks as though someone from FL drove him up a radiator they had in stock. He was able to get going again!
