CCKW Artic Cab

Post by steve1973 » Thu Apr 02, 2015 10:43 pm

I ran across a guy the other day that has a 1944 or 45 CCKW with a artic cab. The cab and other parts of the truck has an original semi gloss OD green. I'm thinking Korean War era. The owner is looking for more information on these cabs. Anyone know about them that can share info on them? Also, another interesting thing about the truck is that the frame rails are re enforced with a "J" channel that runs the entire lenght of the frame. Oversized holes are present for rivets, lines and other items. The holes are either drilled or punched not torched. The welds are very clean and stock bracketry fits over and on the re enforced channels nicely. Is this a later rebuild modification or factory modification? Photos below.

Thanks,
Steve A.

The enclosure kit came out in the late 40's. Many were seen on USAF CCKW Airfield Tankers during the early 50's along with a fender mounted Stewart Warner fuel burning heater or the Harrison Hot Water Heater Kit. Hundreds of these CCKW Open Cab Enclosure Lits were made over by adding wood fillers to adapt them to the M-37 during the 50's. The doors were discarded. The conversion kits were all done at Mt Rainier Ordnance Depot.
I have the manual for the CCKW Kit stashed away in my GMC collection. The reinforced frame may indicate a special purpose body such as one of the Van Bodies.
Can you get the Chassis Number from the frame over the RF axle, it may indicate that the truck was ordered as a Chassis only.

Ben Dover,
Thanks for the info. Any chance of getting a copy of the manual for the artic kit? I will try and get the numbers requested this weekend.

Timken based CCKW's were built into 1945. I have personally seen two 1945 dated Timken trucks. My Timken tipper is a 1944.

Nice truck. What is going to happen to it?

My CCKW is a January 1945 Cargo with Timken diffs.

I thought they did not stop making them with the Timken diffs until the end of WW2 ?

Cheers

I found this arctic cab CCKW after a tip from a friend. It was pretty deep in the woods but the owner says it ran well when it was parked. It even has a title. Plans are to move it and a parts truck that comes with it out of the woods next summer. It actually has most of the rare spare tire mount and has one of the original doors too.

I just found a driver side door in very good condition in Arizona of all places. The cab will now be complete once I get it out of the woods. Alas ,as you can see from the dash picture, it is missing a speedometer and whatever gauge goes in the upper right corner, Any help or leads would be appreciated. The wood steering wheel is obviously in very poor shape.

Reinforced frame indicates that this was ordered as a cab and chassis, the shop vans used a reinforced frame and LeRoi air compressor trucks also had a beefed up frame.
