Sterling 115DD
I have a 1944 Navy Sterling 115DD project that I acquired via eBay. Thanks to the help of several people, I've slowly acquired information about this truck, but until recently I didn't know what it looked like when in Navy service. A friend of mine has a copy of "Naval Aviation Ordnance Equipment Catalog, 1944: OP 865" and the attached image is taken from that document. I'm also attaching a couple images of the unit I have. Sterling made 49 of them for the Navy. I discovered this after another friend of mine found an original parts book - mine is number 663, I've attached the title page of the parts book. I don't know that this is a 1944 truck - I'm inferring that from the parts book. I have the hood and the doors - hood is in great shape, doors are for patterns to make new ones.
Does anybody on here have one of these trucks or have seen one in a museum or collection?
Thanks, Dave.

Dave, I think that Navy catalogue is pretty rare, like your Sterling. Are there any other Navy trucks in it ? Nice find.

Jeff :: There should be other trucks (and trailers) in the catalog - I'll have an opportunity to look at it in-person in a few weeks. The catalog is for the aviation side of the Navy - there should be one for ships also. It would be interesting to see if there is any cross-over between the two catalogs for the larger trucks like this Sterling. For example, is the 150DDS (a torpedo carrier) cross-listed in the Naval aviation catalog?
Jim :: The tires on the GMC Carryall are indeed 9:00-16 NDT's. I am the second owner of this truck - the first owner is a family friend who bought it new in 1966. I was born in 1967 and there are photographs of me riding in this truck as an infant - so this truck and I go back aways together. The 3/4 ton running gear was put on in the first few months after the first owner purchased it to get around the then new California vehicle emissions laws. At that time, any truck 3/4 ton and above was smog exempt. There was a glitch with the roll-out of the legislation in that not all the automakers were synced to the state's plan - this truck was sold without any smog hardware, and the state would not allow it to be registered without that hardware. In the process of sorting all this out, GMC offered to modify the truck to put the smog hardware on pro bono, but the first owner didn't like that idea on principle. So, new Spicer 3/4 ton drivetrain was purchased and installed, and the exemption was granted. The NDT's were put on at that time as was a Braden winch on the front. The truck made lots of camping trips into the deserts of CA, AZ, NM, UT and the NDT's always gave great service.

Re: Sterling 115DD
Dave, the Navy did have some torpedo bombers, although I'm not sure the DDS150's were associated with them - we really don't know. Perhaps we could get lucky. But there are other Sterlings we know were used for Naval Aviation, the big dual chain drive Sterling HCS330 wreckers, and the 6x6 DDS235 wreckers. There is also the Reo version of the DDS235 wrecker, the Model 50V 10 ton Navy aircraft salvage truck which we know very little about. There is also some info out there that some of the Sterling DDS225 6x6 Cardox crash trucks built for the Army Air Force went to the Navy as well. We'll look forward to seeing what you find.

Re: Sterling 115DD
Dave, I just checked the Sterling roster and there are two other surviving DD115's listed, one a 1939 model in Wisconsin, no s/n listed, and 115DD0685 in New York. The roster info is 10 years old now, so there may well be others, like yours. We know that some of these trucks were not built for the military so the fact that the years and serial numbers are outside your range is not surprising.
